| Midas Blenny | Metal Halides So I finally got my tank up and running and Ive had my Halides running since 2pm its now 530 and the top of my canopy is scortching hot. Its hot enough that i cant keep my hand on it for more than a couple seconds. I retrofit a single DE bulb and its the reflector mounted to a piece of metal and then to the canopy. i just put a piece of glass over it so that i dont sun burn anything and now its sending all the heat up towards the canopy. Is this safe? how do you normally retro fit a Halide bulb to your canopy? |

| Midas Blenny | Re: Metal Halides I think I might have to sell this unit and settle with some good PC's or T5's. My chiller is creating a ton of heat along with the halide bulb and balast my tank is still at 82 degrees... good thing Im testing everything out for a while to find out what works. Any suggestions? |

| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | Re: Metal Halides What you need to do is close the back up. One fan in a canopy is fine. Fan blowing out one side and a hole on the opposite side will cause a tunnel keeping the canopy cool.

| Acropora | Re: Metal Halides Did you leave an air gap between the wood on the canopy top and the reflector? If there is no air gap, you are transfering the heat directly onto the wood from the reflector, in essence, creating a fire hazard.. The screws that hold the reflector to the wood, need to be removed, and you could use a few washers or a small piece of pipe for your spacer. Get that metal reflector off of the wood, then think about fans to pull away the heat. Jason

| Midas Blenny | Re: Metal Halides okay so I did the spacers and its about a half inch away from the canopy. The lights turns on in about 45 min im gonna let them run for a couple hours and ill let you guys know if it helped. I might also add another fan to the canopy but we'll see how this turns out... I dont want to loose my halide its too beautiful! |
