I'm starting to get soem nasty brown algea or somthing all over.its been set up for well over 6 weeks i had about 80 pounds of old rock from a previous reef i had years ago...i know the rock is dead now but its a base for the 50 pounds of new rock i bought..uncured also by the way..anyway all thats been going for 6 weeks or more now.i have an ice cap 660 with 4 110 watt vho bulbs. 4' in the center of the 5' tank{ suggestions on if thats a problem welcome}. anyway everything was going great until i bought a snail/crab pack from this g.a.r.f web site and they sent 5 pounds of some garf grunge. i added with reluctance since it was nasty looking, but they swore by it. but now i have brown crap everywhere and it was all nice and bright white from the new oolitic sand bed i had..which is about 90 pounds of oolitic and 40 pounds of crushed coral mixture.im just so bummed man it was looking awsome then now its ugly and brown everywhere please help me |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter Is it a brown dusting over everything? If so it sounds like diatoms and they will go away shortly. What is your water source? If it is tap water that will fuel the diatoms as well as other algae.

| Tunicate | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter well no i dont use tap water, i do have some background with a reef tank hehe, i use water from the local water store its ro/di and they told me to get it there from local fish store here, i guess i would say its a brown dusting all over.it sure is ugly right now, i want it to be bright white and clean looking again. also im getting some very nice colors of coraline coming on, so maybe its not all bad and im just jumping the gun..i would like some opinions on this filter though and what i can do to make it better or adding a canister if needed for pristine water. im sure everyone will say refugium.i just dont have the 400 bucks right now for it, and i made a refugium before ..horrible outcome within 6 months time it broke and ....well thats another topic in itself i suppose p.s i love the quote there about race cars. excellent analogy |

| Tunicate | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter I've got a cpr194. Works really well. I removed bio-balls and replaced with live-rock. A simple refugium that can be done is. I've got my cpr simply sitting inside of a 20 long (20-30 bucks), water will flow out bulkhead and over to a return pump. I can post pictures when I get home if you are interested. How much did you pay for it? |

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter At 6 weeks, you're in the right timeframe for the start of a diatom bloom. They usually hit right after the cycle finishes and can last a month or so. Everything looks like a crappy tan/brown during that time. It's a VERY normal part of every saltwater tank's cycle. Personally, I wouldn't have one of the CPF filters if you gave it to me. There are so many products out there that are much better quality, much better built, and work so much better. MOST reefers run a simple equipment sump instead of an elaborate filter system under the tank, with heaters, skimmers, and such in them instead of bio-balls/bio-bale, and the CPR skimmers definitely leave a lot to be desired for efficiency.

| Tunicate | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter hey missionsix, i have about $110 into that filter including the new rio 1700 pump for the skimmer. Boomer i also have a etss reef devil skimmer from my old system. you guys think that that in a 20 gallon long would be a better set up than what i have now? what about a canister filter? i am used to a fresh water system where ya just toss on a canister filter and call it good i guess. the water seems a bit cloudy like its missing some good old carbon filtering. or is this just all part of the "cycle" for salt water. also yes i would be interested in seeing what you have done with that cpr set up there missionsix, but also keep the info coming guys. i want to learn all i can about this |

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter Wrong guy...I do NOT have one of those... Saltwater filtration is looked at much differently than freshwater filtration. Nitrates aren't much of a concern in F/W, but they usually are in S/W, and canisters and other biological filters are huge nitrate producers. Most people use copious amounts of live rock (1-1/2 to 2 lbs/gallon) and a good protein skimmer as their main sources of filtration. if you use a sump, (and it sounds like you're ready to do that) then you can add mechanical filter bags that trap the particulates, but need to be changed/cleaned every few days, you can use reactors for chemical filtration, (carbon, phosphate remover, etc.) but the primary filtration is still the live rock and skimmer.

| Tunicate | Re: cpr cyclone 194 filter alright i can see what i need to do, i should have just done it from the start..drilling holes in my floor running lines to the basement make a nice big refugium and get that etss reef devil going in a big sump/refuge so it will be easy to maintain and keep clean without trying to work inside the stand everytime it needs a filter cleaning, and the best part of that...silence in my living room once again ![]() |
