Can I keep corals now?

So, for Mothers Day my fiance got me a Coralife Deluxe series single linear strip for our 20 gallon. (By the way, it was a mothers day present from all of the animals...I'm so happy he understands! hahah)

Manufacturer: Coralife
Coralife 24 Inch Aqualight Deluxe Series - Single Linear Strip with one 65 watt 50/50 Compact Fluorescent Lamp w/ Straight Pin Base.

One 65 watt Coralife 50/50 Compact Fluorescent Lamp Included
Built-in Electronic Ballast
Sleek Aluminum Housing
Highly-Polished Reflector
Acrylic Lens Cover
Dimensions: 24 x 5 x 2.5 Inches
Oh yeah and 6,700K

So...Can I keep corals/anems? I really like the light it makes a big difference! Oh and it's a 20 long. So it's not that deep. Where I would be putting the corals would be about only a foot from the light.

Re: Can I keep corals now?

You could keep softies, such as leathers, shrooms and zoas, plus some low light LPS corals. Clams, anenomes and SPS are out of the question. In order to keep those, you want at least a T5 set up.

Re: Can I keep corals now?

Crap, I was excited.

What about, galaxy coral and pom pom xenia? I have each of those from a local reefer I can get really cheap, and love them both, but lighting just isn't my specialty...

Re: Can I keep corals now?

Not the galaxia. As Matt said, you MAY be able to keep the low-light loving corals, and probably xenia, but anything truly photosynthetic will be out of the question.

Re: Can I keep corals now?

No problem Stace. If there is a way you could add another one of those fixtures or upgrade your's to a 2x65w set up then it would be easier to keep the lower light corals like I mentioned.

Stace,

All my lights are PC's at the moment. Look at my 55 gal tank and you will see what I have in those.

I guess I am kind of confused how you said that. You said "it would be easier to keep the lower light corals like I mentioned"

But right now I can keep leathers, zoas, and mushrooms right?? If I upgraded, I can get some more light dependant corals right? If I got another of the same fixture, or the double one?

Re: Can I keep corals now?

Now if you DID want to add/upgrade, you could get a sunpod or something similar to add to the setup... get a smallish one, like the 16 or 20 incher, and suspend over the tank. Wala! nem friendly!

Yes, right now you can keep some leathers, zoas and mushrooms. I keep them under PCs myself with no trouble. However some leathers such as yellow fiji leathers and some of the neon green nepthea and sinularia species of leathers require more light. Those I keep under T5's.

Keeping them and having them thrive aren't al;ways the same. You can keep them, but adding more light will help them thrive and grow better.

Sorry for any confusion I caused.
