| Scopas Tang | Re: Brand new tank...now what? Well, as far as a sump.......I have a 50gallon that I don't have a sump on...just two AC 70 HOBs that I've setup as refugiums. They each have some rubble and cheato in them with a light sitting on top.......seems to work ok. I also have 2 koralia PHs ...a #2 and #3 (but really, two #3s would be better)...and also 2 pumps from intank filters that I have at each back corner for more flow. If you could get 2 AC 500/110s and set them up as HOB refugiums....along with a couple of PHs......might work for you.......I'd give it a shot.... ![]() HOWEVER....I must also say that I do NOT have any tempermental corals, clams or anemones. Most of what I have are softies...with a couple of montipora and a trumpet/candycane mixed in. They're pretty forgiving. If you're planning on some serious wimpy type corals that pout or keel over at the least infraction (lps/sps).....( )....then a sump would probably be a better bet.....

| Tunicate | Re: Brand new tank...now what? I would have to look into what kind of coral I want exactly...I do know that I want to go Indonesian, fish, rock, coral, all from the same area. OKay, that being said...lighting...I mow have a 36" fluorescent 20,000k coralife. The standard thing just with an upgraded bulb. If someone gives the tank and hood to me for nothing, I am never going to complain. ![]() What would be the suggested lighting for my tank? T-5's, MH? How many bulbs, how many Watt, what spectrum? |

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: Brand new tank...now what? The easiest (and cheapest in the long run) option is to go to your bank, take out every cent in there and put that in the tank. ![]() You may also need to set it up so that your paychecks are automatically deposited into the tank instead of your bank account... ![]() A few years ago, the "rule-of-thumb" was between $30 and $50 per gallon to set up a reef tank...I wouldn't be surprised if that hasn't increased somewhat with inflation and demand.

| Golden Moray | Re: Brand new tank...now what? Boomer that is was I do, my check is directly deposited into and EMPTY tank right now, let alone my boyfriends check that goes into our current setup!! Soon it will be just me, my boyfriend and our fishes with no home due to the fact there is none leftover. But in all seriousness, save up for it! Don't make yourself broke, take it slow..the process takes awhile anyways, might as well not be scavaging for pennies just to live

| Golden Moray | Re: Brand new tank...now what? Watts are irrelevant. Watts are just a measure of electricity. You can have the same amount of watts on two differnt bulbs and a large light output difference. I would say for you, 300w total of T5.
