Acrylic Tank Question

I found a 180g 72x24x24 acrylic tank that I really like online. The previous owner bought it new 7yrs ago and had it up and running for 4 of them. He couldnt remember the manufacturer on the tank but said that he remembers "Integraded Plastics" having something to do with the manufacturers name. I couldnt find anything on the web about it and frankly am new to Acrylic tanks.

Anyways..we have been emailing eachother and he said the tank is made of 3/8" acrylic on all sides...including the top. Shouldnt a 72x24x24 tank be made of 1/2" in for the sides? Should I be cautious of a tank made of 3/8"?

Any acrylic owners out there with a 180?

Re: Acrylic Tank Question

I only have a 90, wish I could help you!!!

But, I am just assuming, if he had it truly up for 4 years, it should be fine. But I am sure that others will have more educated advice.

Re: Acrylic Tank Question

As a tank manufacturer, I can tell you that whoever built it was cheap. You are correct, what we call a 180R is 1/2" minimum. The bottom could be 3/8", but generally we go 1/2" all the way around. I can promise you that it would bow, and I would not trust it to last personally.

Re: Acrylic Tank Question

Here is a link to the tank in question. I think the price is right and I really liked the stand. But..Im going to shy away from it. Ive also changed my mind on going to acrylic..Im going to go with glass for sure.

Re: Acrylic Tank Question

At $799 I am not surprised he has had no bids in 10 days.

Re: Acrylic Tank Question

I like glass better too. You will need to do iron free for on the front for something that big though, as the dimensions require thicker glass.
