Re: Durso Stand Pipes

yup, i got them on my tank using 1 1/2" bulkheads.
the pumps i dont know the GPH after restrictions so can not say anything on if your (1 or 2?) bulkhead/s will handle the flow.

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

Okay so I got the Durso standpipe, set up my 1 return Mag 18 to 2 outlets, 1 1 1/2" bulkhead for drain, when the water starts going the water level starts changing.
First its high in the overflow, then it reduces and the level in the sump rises, then keeps going back and forth.
Does this have to do with the hole at the top of my standpipe?

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

not sure what the gph is on your pumps, but it sound like its too much for the bulkhead. how many gph are running through the bulkhead? FYI a 1.5" bulkhead is maxed out at about 1500gph.

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

I say increase or clean out the hole in the top of your durso. I just had to drill mine out due to clog after 1 1/2 year running. Did it this morning after listening to the up and surge down all night. I ran a drill through as just poking it with a toothpick did not do it.

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

IIRC, you actually want to build the durso one size larger than the bulkhead and adapt it down where it connects. That should give you more water in the durso than it needs, helping to reduce the noise and improve the flow.

Build your own Durso Standpipe â„¢

"My tank has a 1 inch bulkhead on the bottom glass where the water drains out. For this size hole, I recommend you use 1¼ inch PVC for the standpipe. I do not recommend 1½ inch PVC as the larger fittings are much harder to fit inside overflow chambers. And secondly, there is no advantage in 1½ inch over 1¼ inch PVC when dealing with a 1 inch bulkhead -- the bulkhead is the limiting factor for the amount of water that can drain out.

With 1 inch and smaller bulkheads the standpipe PVC diameter needs to be larger than the bulkhead to work correctly. I get a lot of e-mail questions on why this is. Honestly, I'm not sure. Typically if you use 1 inch PVC pipe on a 1 inch bulkhead you get poor results. (Some exceptions with smaller low flow tanks.) Take my word on it and use 1¼ inch PVC pipe. For large tanks with 1.5 inch bulkheads and large return pumps however, there does not seem to be any need to oversize the standpipe for larger bulkheads. Larger bulkheads can use PVC pipe & fittings that match the size of the bulkhead. (I consider tanks in the 350 gallon and up good candidates for 1.5 inch bulkheads)."

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

the mag 18 puts out 1800 gph but with a calculator provided by another RS member the flow calculated only to 800gph

Is this the one?
Reef Central Online Community

Probably the most accurate of the ones I've seen.

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

yeah thats the calculator I used. I chose to go with 3.4 pvc for the plumbing so thats why it takes it down to 800gph. If I increase the pvc size to 1" or 1.5" flow goes way up to 1300gph but the psi goes down to 2psi. I am using eductors on the returns so I wanted to get higher psi.. the pump really moves water in the DT i thought it was too much, but this is the first time im using this big of a pump.
Im gonna try a little bigger hole on top of the durso.
can I make a spraybar type thing on one output or is it better to have both the same?

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

I've been running the tank for a couple hours and it still seem that there is too much power comming from the returns. tomorrow I will add a ball valve to each return so I can slow it down a little. After I put them on ill post some pictures. Thanks for all your help guys and gals!

Re: Durso Stand Pipes

i dont know if i would put a ball valve on or add another return line, basically you just want the pressure to slow some not the actually gph to slow.

what size tank is this again?
