Mag drive 1200

First of all, hello to everyone in Reef Sanctuary. My name is Ryan and I joined this community because like everyone here, I am a true reef enthusiast and there is so much to learn about from fish to corals and all the available equipment out there. Which leads me to my question. I just purchased a Mag Drive 1200 pump and was wondering if I can I run it over the sump just above the water line with PVC piping running from the intake down into the sump so that it doesn't transfer heat to the water? Or should I use it regularly and leave it submerged in the sump? Does it make a difference? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help and it's a pleasure to be part of Reef Sanctuary, Ryan.

I do not think they are self priming, if you ran it out of the sump it would have to be lower then the water level in the sump connected by a line on the suction side of the pump from below the water line of the sump.

Re: Mag drive 1200

to answer your question, YES you can do it. I used to run my Mag1200 out of sump up untill I switch Pumps. I still use my Mag1200 for my skimmer but is already in sump.

Re: Mag drive 1200

Thanks! So as soon as I plug it in, will it start to suck water from the sump below? Do I need to do anything special? I guess I can test in the bath tub first and just hold it above the water and see if it pulls water up right? That might be a smart move before I start gluing the pipes together, huh? Thanks again.

Re: Mag drive 1200

Let me know if it works, because I think they are not self priming. As I sated earlier about the top of the water level being higher then then pump.

Re: Mag drive 1200

Yes I would test it first, tub or 5gal buckets. It sounds like you are going to hard pipe it, just a tip, to cut down on noise from vibration use a short section of vynal tubeing from the discharge of the pump to your PVC.

Welcome to "RS"! I have "some" experience with Magdrive pumps. I'm afraid they are not selfpriming. 1st, I'm almost sure the pump intake must be below the water level. 2nd even though they say Mags can be used externally, I found they are prone to leaking & very noisy when run this way. Believe me I have tried!
IMHO heat produced by running them submerged will cause far less problems than external.

Re: Mag drive 1200

As an Opperating Engineer in my younger days, if a pupm was not self priming, if it had a check valve on the discharge side, and you got it primed to pump, and the check valve did not leak it would stay primed, but that is alot of info to you and may not understand it. In a reef tank with algae, snails, ect most check valves fail and leak.

Re: Mag drive 1200

I haven't had the chance to try it yet. I kept getting called in to work but when I do (hopefully I'll get to stay home and try it tonight) I'll post the results. I may even try it with a check valve but with what everyone is saying, it seems that IN the sump is the best bet. Thanks guys!
