Darrell's Upgrades

Here are the new upgrades. Frankie has been giving be crap about my crappy PS PC75 Skimmer. Well I upgraded to a Berlin Classic with a Rio 2100 pump...the pump was the one I was using as my return pump, but I replaced it with a Rio 2500 pump.

I also added a Phosban 150 Reactor with 50/50 phoban/carbon...it is inline with my u/v sterilizer.

At anyrate here they are...This skimmer is 3 times as large as my old one...well I hope bigger is better...my wife still thinks it is a bit much.

Skimmer

Reactor

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

Nice job! Have you considered converting the trickle side of your filter into a small refugium?

No...but I have thought about adding a refugium...How would I do that? I am getting excited now.

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

BTW...I forgot to tell this story...

I took this to Lowe's today to have someone there in the plumbing department help me figure out the best way to "plumb" this.

I briefly explained what I was trying to accomplish...

There were two of the helper guys there listening and looking at this and one of them laughed and said..."At first I thought this was some kinda fancy bong..."

And his partner there, who was probably about 60 or so, looked at me to see my reaction...which was one of humor as well...and then he said..."That is what I was thinking."

I am not a druggie, but it does look like a fancy piece of drug equipment to the non-reefer...wait a minute... Aren't we different hobbiest by the same name?

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

You'd have to glue in a wall between the tickle side and the sump side. I did it with my ProClear trickle filter.

Before.

During Glue Up.

After.

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

I did that with a smaller HOB filter, made a little teeny fuge out of it and it worked great!! Had LOTS of chaeto in there and a little rubble.

Just when I think I'm done...

Well I've got to explain this next project to Brenda (my wife.) She thinks I have gone mad.

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

BTW Darrell, nice job on the plumbing. You seem to have done a fine job! I think it's safe to remove the warning tags on those lines. Unless you plan on dosing gas into your nice new fancy bong

Lol...I just hooked everything up...give me some time to pull the tags off.

I want it to look new. And the tags help...lol

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

Things really do look nice when they're new and clean, don't they. For a skimmer, it takes about 15 seconds to lose that nice, clean look.

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

If you take a look around on the web there are some nice mods you can make to that Berlin classic skimmer to get better performance out of them. They can be very touchy/grouchy skimmers. The best thing you can do to it is either upgrade the venturi on it to a Mazzei (dunno if this are still produced or not), or remove the venturi and replace the pump with a pump that has a venturi on the intake side of the pump. Ton of other mods out there as well.
Just some stuff to keep in mind if you wanna tinker with it in the future.

Otherwise looking good.

Re: Darrell's Upgrades

I have already thought about upgrading it to the Turbo model...

When I called Frankie yesterday to tell him about it...one of the first things he said was we need to work on modifying it. He hadn't even seen any pics.

What is it with you people... can't stop tinkering with stuff...lol.
