Mag Pump Temp and Noise

I have read the Mag pump reviews and they all say these pumps are quiet and don't add alot of heat. I have a Mag 7 that is about 5 yrs old with a fairly new empellor and it is pretty noisy. I have cleaned the pump and empellor just about a month ago. My tank temp this last week has recently crept up to 83-84 degrees.

What is your experience with these pumps? Do I need to replace with a complete new one? Clean again? Is there a better alternative pump that is quiet and does not add alot of heat to the water?

Re: Mag Pump Temp and Noise

Do you run them internally or externally? If internally then yes they can create heat issues. It shouldn't be a sudden one though. I just run them externally to avoid the heat issue. Of course now I get seal issues so pick your poison.

Re: Mag Pump Temp and Noise

I find the mag pumps on the noisey side, but they seem quiet enough for most folks.
I did replace a Mag 12 in one of my tanks a few years back with a Quiet One and my tank temps stabalized as well as noise...

Re: Mag Pump Temp and Noise

Thanks for the responses. My pump is submersed in my sump.
I came home ready to tackle the heat problem today and surprise, she is running fine, my usual 80 degrees on the button...... hummm... So being all motivated I figured I should do something anyway so I cleaned my dual fans in my canapy. Boy that made a difference in air flow. I did not mess with the Mag pump since if it aint broke, I shouldn't fix/break it. I am thinking two factors added to my sudden tank temp increase. I think the Mag pump must have sucked in something from the sump cause it was much more noisy and maybe it finally cleared out. Also, the outside temps have climbed here in the last week to 80ish outside so it is likely I did not have my AC on cool enough and the house may have warmed up while I was at work. Guess I will keep an eye on it for the next couple days to be sure.
