adding sump

So my 65 gallon is a non drilled tank, and im looking to add a sump when i move, while i have the tank off the stand. Im looking at those aftermarket overflow boxes. Is there one that you would recommend??

Im looking at this one but can tell how this system creates siphon and if it would be able to gather siphon again if power failed and came back on to prevent any bad floods??

Reef Aquarium Filtration: Eshopps Overflow Boxes

let me know what you think. Thanks all

Re: adding sump

That is a good style overflow box. Do not get the "continuous siphon" style ie CPR. They need an aqualifter pump to insure flow. The one you linked to is as good as it gets if setup right and maintained once in a while. To set it up correct you should have a pump close to the max of the overflow; not faster but not a lot slower. That way bubbles can't gather in the tube, they are whisked away. Once every couple months I pull the tubes out of mine and clean the scum and algae build up out of it.
All this said, when and if I move my tank again I will drill it.

Re: adding sump

Life Reef makes very nice overflow boxes. Lifereef Filter Systems

They are a bit pricey but from the reviews I've read they are very good.

Re: adding sump

thanks for the reply. Im going to order and 800 gph. You think thats to much for a 65 gallon or about just right. I would like the higher turnover from the pump only, but then your talkin about a lot more noise, so i figured this should be okay. Also what would you use for plumbing. I would like to use PVC but i dont know what kind of cement to use. I was told all of it should be safe but i tend to think otherwise unless i hear it on one of these forums, not from a menards employee lol.

Re: adding sump

First off cured PVC cement is just fine. As far as the flow for the 65 gallon, 800gph through the sump is a bit much. Your next post will be "how do I stop micro bubbles" unless you are running a HUGE sump. Stick to around 300gph through the sump. That means after figuring head pressure your pump wants to be 300gph.

Re: adding sump

the sump is designed for a 300 gallon tank lol. i wanted plenty of room for the refugium and filtration means. ill go with the 300 gph box then.

If i got the 800 box and ran 400 through the sump would that be okay or would i have a problem with the overflow not keeping siphon??

What creates microbubles?? Is there any good way to get rid of them if you get them???

way new to sumps so im sure ill be posting alot about them. Thanks for the replys!!

Re: adding sump

People (myself included) try to put to much flow through the sump. Slower flow through the sump gives your skimmer more time to work. Most of your flow should come from powerheads or a closed loop in the display tank. I am not sure what flow will cause you problems with your 800 gph overflow but keep an I on it. If bubbles start forming in the tube you must increase flow.I am running close to 900gph through a hang on back that has two J tubes.

Micro bubbles form when the water crashes into the sump and from the skimmer output. With high flow through the sump the bubbles are not given time to rise and burst on their own. With a very large sump it shouldn't be a problem though. My sump is a 90 gallon 4 foot tank and when it was new with no lime in plumbing I did have some bubbles. I put another set of bubble traps in with very little success.

Re: adding sump

okay, well you know more then i would lol. I will order the 300 gph box and use the same sump. My skimmer is going to be an ASM G-2 up to 250 gallon. I have good intentions on getting a 210 gallon in 2009 when my CD account matures so i want to make sure everything i get now will be able to accomodate the 210. I will obviously have to increase the pump because im going to get the 210 drilled. Thank you for all the info, i will be sure to post some pics with the project when i get it all setup.

Thanks again

Re: adding sump

I like the Mags, I run a 18, but I have seen threads else where the smaller ones seem to be problematic. Also filter socks is a good way to go if you have a bubble problem.
