Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

I saw that Petsmart has a 24w UV sterilizer that has a small pump with it. It is designed to sit inside the aquarium and the small powerhead fedds the unit and the water just returns to the tank. The price is right at $49, but I am wondering if anyone has had one and what they thought. I am sure it isn't as effective as a higher priced unit, but for $49, any benefit I get in controlling algae spores and / or parasites would be a plus.

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

UV sterilizers are indiscrimate killers of everything that goes thru them(providing the bulb is clean). That means it kills good bacteria and bad, they also kill pods.and if you have a fuge thats just about the worst thing you could have happen. As for killing ich well its not so good at that, since ich has three stages and only at one stage is it out drifting around in the tank.If you want some real protection for your tank get an ozoneizer. It only kills the bad stuff,it kills ich in all three stages and it will make your water so clear you will wonder if there is any in the tank.

I would have to stongly disagee with what you have said a good UV setup with the right flow is one of the best things you can do for a tank. It enliminates more bad that good by a long shots

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

Its not the point of how much good or bad it kills. It kills everything, everything but the main reason people get them....ich.In two stages of ichs life cycle it is either burried in the sand or attached to a fish, and it wont go thru the uv like that.

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

So Tim, I guess your basic question has been answered...

The Petsmart uv sterilizer is probably either a bad idea or not worth the money...

No.

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

I looked up the UV sterilizer that petsmart sells. It isn't a bad product. But I think that everyone is saying that you can get a better product from places like RS sponsors for basically the same price. Check out their websites.

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

I personally will never have an ozone system. That stuff just scares me. Sure, it kills all sorts of bad things in the tank but it can also kill everything and everyone outside the tank.

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

I would be afraid of a sterilizer that cheap...I'm afraid of PetSmart anyway, even though I shop there on occasion.
I have a CURRENT unit that Marine Depot sells for around $90 (mine is only 8w, though)...I'm sure the sponsors here are comparable.
I haven't thought of mine as being an essential piece of equipment for awhile now. Doesn't mean I am getting rid of it! I QT everything possible and I try to keep phosphates low.

Re: Petsmart UV Sterilizer?

If used with the proper monitering system ozone isnt dangerous. If carbon filtration is used it will quickly clear out of a sump. You would need a very large ozone generator to create enough ozone to kill anyone. In fact you can smell it (I know a guy who likes the smell) and if it gets that strong you have to be trying to do something wrong.
