Biocube Fuge

I have a biocube 14g and would like to add a fuge to it to help with my alge problem. Is there any place to buy this or any other suggestions to help with the red alge problem. The tank is stock/no mods have been made yet. I have seen post about removing the bio balls in the second chamber and replacing with cheato and LR. I have done the water changes and tured off lights, the alge keeps comming back so I want to try a FUGE or some other mod to help this and better my tank overall.

Re: Biocube Fuge

they do make a fuge/skimmer combo, but you would have to mod the hood a little, and I dont know that it is small enough for the 14...I have the 29 and they make it to fit those...or larger cubes...how new is your tank? ony red alage?

Re: Biocube Fuge

i just added a fuge to my biocube 8. i did that mod where you take out the bioballs and replace it with LR and chaeto with a submerssible light. so far so good, i don't get nearly as much algae, although i never had the red kind.

Re: Biocube Fuge

you've been given some GREAT advice but I want to add something.. the Fuge is not going to take away your Algae problem.. only help to cut it back some at best. What needs to happen is identify what's causing it and make those corrections. Then and ONLY then will your tank be all it can be.

Algae is cause by MANY different things such as:

Over Feeding
Feeding with product that has preservatives
Less than perfect supply water (tap water or a faulty RO/DI unit)
Slow-low water flow
Light issues (old, degraded bulbs, extended photo periods, natural sunlight saturating the tank etc)

Try addressing these topics and see if that doesn't help.

Good luck and HAPPY REEFING!!

i forget now who makes it, but it looks like this:

and since i'm posting pics, here's my fuge:

the light is now secured under my drip tray so it's not touching the chaeto anymore, and i raised the waterlevel so the chaeto is completely submerged.

Feeding has been some of the problem along with tap water,, but I have switched both. Now I just want to give it some extra help.

That's often the case. One other cause can be over stocking the tank. The detritus builds up quicker than the biological filtration can remove it and you have "Algae Food" in abundance. Just keep in mind that water changes, correcting the problem and TIME are your best friends right now. It happened slowly and it will get better even MORE slowly! You need to siphon off as much as you can with each water change to REMOVE it from your tank.

Re: Biocube Fuge

Would it also help to turn off all the lights and just have the 2 LED's on?

Re: Biocube Fuge

It helps but you have to remember if you have photosynthetic corals they HAVE to get light to produce food.

One thing I did to help cut back some once I had done just about EVERYTHING else is to create a "Light Deprivation Device" for my 12g Nano Cube. It was a very technical and complex device that blocked ALL light from my tank for 5 days. No more than 5 days because I DO have photosynthetic corals.

Here is a pic of the device... just remember it's VERY complex so if you have any questions don't hesitate to post them... also I am thinking of getting a PATENT on it

Re: Biocube Fuge

I have the same submersible light that Leahski has. You can get it at Fountain and Pond Lights for indoor or outdoor lighting
It is cheap -- like $10 or so
