Re: wellding glass tanks ???

No major tank manufacturers use this method, and I do not know of any custom manufacturers using it. I don't know anything about the process so I don't know if it is adequate for tank building or not, it seems quite expensive.
A quick search on google didn't show me much on if it is something applicable for glass aquariums. Most of what I found was for communications and healthcare related uses (IE making healthcare equipment with tight tolerances for temperature on the welds).
I couldn't find much info on using this for larger structural glass.

Re: wellding glass tanks ???

There is no way to apply heat to the edges of glass to get them to fuse without first, slowly, heating the entire piece of glass to just before melting. Otherwise it would crack. Mark, please don't try this!

Re: wellding glass tanks ???

I've seen it done in a factory before. It was done on a robotic line making protective shields on high tech equipment. I don't know the process but it did weld two pieces of glass (was a special glass though almost bullet proof but indeed was glass not lexan or plasic type). But from what I understand it's not something "done by hand" or in a DIY shop. The equipment was so expensive that it's not practical for an "Aquarium" company to be able to do it.

The laser was able to heat the ends of the glass to a soft state and at the exact right time and temp it fused them together. The drawback was that it created a distortion in the area so I don't see it very viable or practical. Maybe technology has change but a few years ago it was expensive and not very pleasing to the eyes. It was COOL to watch though.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!
