sump pump?

Ok all you flow experts. I just got a sump and overflow box for X-mas and now I need to know what size pump I need to make all this work. I have a 10gal. eshopps sump and overflow box rated rated at 300gph. I am not home but if I was to guess I would say that it is no more than 5 feet from the tank to the sump. So what size pump do I need?

Re: sump pump?

You'll need to figure if you want to reach the 300gph limit of the overflow or undersize the sump pump for further growth.

Also, 5 ft is pretty far from sump to tank, you'll also need to include the vertical pipe to the output into the tank (unless that 5ft already includes this). Get real good measurements and then you can size the pump.

BTW. I'm using a RIO 1700 on my 65gal with a built in overflow

I don't understand, how would undersizing the pump allow for growth? I would think oversizing it and using a ball valve to restrict flow would help with growth.

Re: sump pump?

Personally I would push the 300 GPH limit. I would not go over this suggested limit, but I would try to be as close as possible.

Re: sump pump?

Is it 5 feet vertical to get the water from the sump back into the aquarium? How many bends will the pipe have in it? That counts towards head loss too.

Friction loss Charts

Will the pump be submersible?

Re: sump pump?

An early search without all the information:

Danner Mag-Drive Supreme 7 700 GPH Water Pump (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Water Pumps > Submersible > 500-1000 GPH )

Or the 1260, which is WAY more then I would spend on a pump this small but they do make good pumps:
Eheim 1260 Pump (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Water Pumps > Submersible > 500-1000 GPH )

Sorry, i was talking about the growth of the pump as in increasing the size. If you can find a 200gph pump cheap (or free) on ebay or craigslist then that would be cool. You could always grow into the 300gph pump. Like michael as stated, go for the 300gph max. if you can.

But to do this, you'll need measurements to size the pump correctly.

Re: sump pump?

Man... I just deleted a nice long post....

The pumps above should be good pumps. Keep in mind you want to be near the max of the overflow box, because if the flow is too slow air bubbles might start to build up in the J tube and could possibly cause a lose in siphon.
When looking around for pumps look at th flow chart and look for something that pumps around 300gph around 6 feet of head to include losses from plumbing as well. A union and valve put in the plumbing after your pump is always a good idea to make removing and cleaning you pump easy later on.

I'm gonna post a link for you in a bit to help you with the head pressure and selecting a pump...

I've read that you shouldn't restrict the pump.
What I did was, I put a T in the line with the ball valve on the side that returns to the sump.

Re: sump pump?

Ok I measured and it will be alomost 5ft from the bottom of the sump to the tank, give or take 6 inches to play with.So I looked online at my LFS and this is what I see. I can either go with this one:
Mag Drive 350 Water Pump with 10 ft. | Water Pumps | Water Pumps & Power Heads | Aquarium - ThatPetPlace.com
This is rated at 350gph at 10' if I am reading the specs right or this one:

Mag Drive 250 Water Pump with 10 ft. Cord | Water Pumps | Water Pumps & Power Heads | Aquarium - ThatPetPlace.com

Rated at 250gph at 6' if I am reading right.

If I go with the larger one what will I need to do to keep the GPH where I need it and do you guys use flexible tubing or pvc? My sump came with a 1-1/4" bulkhead and 3' of 1" flex tubing. Aww, I am so confused someone help poor little old me,lol.

Re: sump pump?

I have a 600gph overflow with a Mag9 return pump.
Opening and closing the ball valve on the return to the sump side lets you change what goes back into the tank.

I've got all PVC... except for my drainline.
