CPR Bak-Pak skimmer stopped

My CPR Bak-pak skimmer stopped working. I plugged it into another outlet but with no luck. Thinking the problem is with the RIO 600 and it just decided to die.

Should I look for anything?

Re: CPR Bak-Pak skimmer stopped

Well, this is the cynic in me showing. I recommend looking for a new skimmer. Assuming we are talking about your 20 gal tank, I'd use an AquaC Remora. I use one on my 30 gal reef and I have been delighted with it.

If that option is not available, you can try taking apart the RIO 600, cleaning it and see it that does any good. Be sure to clean the venturi also, at this may be causing a problem. That may not help. Personally, I have found RIO pumps to be very unreliable. If you have found that the RIO 600 has "gone to the great reef system in the sky", consider replacing it with something like a MAG 2 or 3, and retrofitting it to the CPR Bak-pak.

After taking the skimmer off the tank this morning, pulling apart the RIO 600 and pulling out the Impeller I didn't find anything really causing it to stop. So I put everything back together and plugged it in. Nothing.

Took it apart the second time and made certain the impeller was sitting properly in the housing and put it back together. I plugged it in and it started running.

Working like new now

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

You can replace it with an MJ1200 for around $20.00.
