Re: sump design...check it out!

i GUESS ill take pictures...jk, sounds like a plan. should i put the ball valve closer to the overflow T or should i keep it where it is?? I figured if it was closer the full pressure from the overflow doesnt have to push the water as far..

Attached is a photo of my sump when new. I run the water height to 1 inch below the highest internal baffle.

Another consideration is whether you plan to use a sump sock and also whether you are planning for a sponge / carbon area.

Re: sump design...check it out!

Very nice sump lowfi. It's pretty funny, because this past week, I have just been researching the same DIY sump, but I am thinking of using a 29gallon. What dimensions are you planning on using for each chamber? I've always seen the return chamber the smallest, but I've read that this is the area where most evaporation will occur, thus requiring topoff more frequently. Just curious about sizes of chambers since I will be doing the same.

Re: sump design...check it out!

do you think that bubble trap with live rock is a good idea? I cant figure out how im going to plumb the overflow so that there is sufficient flow to both the refugium and the skimmer...!

thanks!!!

Lowfi I would think the majority of water draining will pass right by the tee You may end up with very little flow to the refugium. How about turning the sump around so the refugium is under the drain & placing your ball valve below the tee. this way you can turn the valve down into the ref section & it will force the majority of water thru the tee to the skimmer section. Just a thought. What do Ya think?

Re: sump design...check it out!

PSHPAINT has got the idea. Do You have an internal overflow? If it's an hob, can move it to the other side of the tank? Is the drain 1"? If You don't have the pipe& valves already You could go up a size. Say 1 1/4 maybe. The water would drain a little better. I like the bubble traps where the water exits at the bottom. Point the intake on the sedra right where the water comes out. I don't know about putting LR in the B trap. Would the proteins & such collect on the rock instead of making it to the skimmer?

Re: sump design...check it out!

IMHO it would be best to make the skimmers output dump into the refugium that way it doesnt get straight water from the tank and becomes less of a nutrient trap.
btw, your sump design is the same as mine

Re: sump design...check it out!

Same design I did. Mine is a 75gal. I would do valve on both outlets of the tee to get it balanced out. I would also buy glass baffles. Easy to have cut & install.

I did 2 & wish I had done 3. I think it depends on how much flow you have.
