Unhappy hot water in my RO FILTER

While i was making water the cold water pipe broke under the house. only hot water ran thru the RO, do you think it hurt the resin and should i throw out the water. Its a 4 stage ro with deionization cartridge.

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

I don't know this for FACT but I have read that HOT water (not merely warm water) will indeed damage some of your RO/DI filters. Do you have a TDS meter? You could always compare straight tap water to the final output of your system and see what amount is passing through. Hopefully others will chime in shortly.

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

I've read that hot water can damage the RO membrane pretty quickly (within minutes). The best thing to do is check your TDS on the water you have made and see if it is elevated. That would tell you if the membrane is messed up. I'm not sure about the DI resin, but I think the RO membrane is the biggest concern with hot water.

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

Here's a quote from Thefilterguys on another forum...

"It doesn't take long for hot water to damage the membrane only minutes at temps over 110 degrees. The first signs are high RO water TDS and rapid DI exhaustion.

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

Oh bath water "shouldn't" hurt the filters but it's a good idea to test either way.

Good luck

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

Yup, make sure to test. TDS meters are inexpensive and a good investment to make sure your RO/DI filters are running optimally and changed at the right time. Not to early or too late

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

lol, a trick question? if you are hooked up to a faucet the hot water must have been on anyway? normally the ro unit is connected directly to the cold supply. Steve

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

Yeah my RO unit is plumbed directly into my COLD supply line. Unless Osam Bin Laden goes under my house, cuts the lines and re'solders them backwards it's impossible for hot (or even WARM right now) water to get to the RO/DI unit.

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

hmmm... good point Mine is hooked up to the cold water line of my washing machine via a Y garden hose fitting. No cold water means it would just get no water.

Re: hot water in my RO FILTER

The colder the water, the less it produces so maybe some folks would hook into both lines to get warm water? Hmmmm, that is something I'm going to look into. Those valves you can buy to keep from getting frozen or burnt while in the shower.....

The regulator valves I think they are called.
