Accident Waiting to Happen!!!

I have a question. I just recently got my tank filled and working in correlation with my sump. Except one minor detail. If you look at my return line it is submerged in the water. I cut the power to my return pump and all of a sudden i got back flow from my tank into the sump. Big Problem... Any suggestions on what i can do to prevent this? I noticed my drain plumbing has a tube sticking out the top of it that will stop the suction in an event like this but with the pressure of the return line this type of thing would'nt work. My wife wants me to just cut the hose above the water level so it cant back flow but i just worry about the splashing if i do that. Any suggestions would be helpful. Im going to check out everyone else's setup now.

just below the water line on the return line,,,,drill a small hole 1/8th" and it will create a siphon break. 2 holes would be even better,,,just incase one gets clogged or a snail is sitting on it~

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Accident Waiting to Happen!!!

My return has a small siphon break hole on the underside of the elbow fitting. When the pump is off the hole allows air in breaking the back siphon.

Re: Accident Waiting to Happen!!!

You can also have a check-value but the siphon break hole as Witful mention is so much better (and cheaper).
