Filter Cleaning

Hey guys, I have an XP3 canister in my tank and was wondering how often I should clean, the tank has been running almost 3 months and I haven't cleaned it at all yet. Before everyone tells me to drop the canister, I plan on getting a sump around X-Mas time but until then I will be using the canister, damn LFS I would have started out with a sump if I had known. As is always the case my ignorance will cost me more money but now that I have found this place no more wasted money.

Hey Jason, Welcome, glad you found RS. Get the sump going asap but hang on to that canister filter it will serve a purpose as you gain experience.

Re: Filter Cleaning

You'll clean it every time you use it. I would suspect the "serve a purpose" might mean for water cleaning during a chemical incident (coral releases toxins, fish pollutes tank etc) or just for random tank cleaning. You'd use it similar to a vacuum cleaner and clean it thoroughly afterwards.

Just my hunch.

When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: Filter Cleaning

OK, Thanks Jack, looks like I better get to cleaning it this weekend. Hmm brings about another questions, do I need to change the media or just rinse it off? I have biostars in it and I believe a carbon bag as well as foam filters.

Re: Filter Cleaning

You should be changing that as well after a period of time it is spent meaning full of the waste it is removing

Re: Filter Cleaning

i would only use it for flow. maybe some carbon too for chemical fitration. but thats it. if you have LR thats all you need for biofiltration. a good cleanning crew and you is all you need for mechanical filtration. my 2cents

Re: Filter Cleaning

25lbs in what size tank? that should be enough to support your fish. there will be plenty of aerobic activity to convert NH3 and NO2 to NO3. it might be enough for anaerobic activity aswell, maybe not but for sure good on the first part of the cycle.

Re: Filter Cleaning

that should do ya for fish. need more rock for corals. but for fish that should do. well if its good rock, more porous the weight is really irrelevant, its all about the surface area

Re: Filter Cleaning

I just had a thought since LR is used in sumps by some could I take out the bio wheels in my canister and repalce them with rubble LR?
