Power Heads????

I have a few questions regarding their use. I have a 55 gal. corner tank with an XP3 canister filter. When I set it up I had the option of using either the spray bar or the power head (pretty much an open ended tube) The flow in the tank appears to be good as I can see the food moving in the current when I feed my Damsels. I am confused about power heads though and if what came with the filter is actually a PH or not. I looked online at my LFS to try and see what one looks like but could not find a good picture. Do I need to buy something and if so what would be a good one to get? I do plan on keeping a variety of corals and some nems down the road.

PS. I love this place I never have read so much good information from so many knowledgable people. I know with all your help my reef will be great in time.

Re: Power Heads????

Powerheads are small individual pumps used to increase and direct flow, seperate from any filtration device. Korallias are supposed to be very good, as they act more as a fan, spreading the flow out over a wide area. Other good ones are maxijets, which produce more of a "jet stream"

Re: Power Heads????

Yup, power heads are just a way to get more flow in the tank. If the only flow you have is from the canister filter I would think about getting a couple for added flow. The Koralias are great and have a wide dispersion pattern. The MaxiJets are very economical and reliable but have a very narrow flow and you are better off with 2 pointing at each other to get the flow throughout the tank. Tunze are awesome but expensive and there are lots of other brands out there as well.

Re: Power Heads????

One of the biggest reason for an power head Is to prevent dead spots In the tank from accuring do to lack of water circulation.

Re: Power Heads????

Ok I see that the MAXIJETS are in my price range at the moment since I need more LR as well. So for a 55gal. corner tank which one would you guys recommend?

Re: Power Heads????

I like the MaxiJets for economical powerheads and their fairly efficient and don't put a LOT of heat into the tank for their given output.

Plus there is a really COOL mod-kit you can get for them that makes them very similar to the Korolia we have all been looking at and talking about. I'll find the link and post it back shortly.

Re: Power Heads????

Ok here is the thread where we talked about this. The irony is that at our "Reef Club" meeting on Tuesday night they gave one of these away (Not to me unfortunately ).

Anyone try the Maxi-jet mod sold here?

Re: Power Heads????

Ok so I bought the maxijet 1200 and phew my poor little feather duster is waving like mad. I also got some more LR and found a nice cured 2lb. piece loaded with green and red coraline. My Clown fish looks ike he or she is fighting an uphill battle now against the flow is this ok?

Re: Power Heads????

Yes it's "Ok" for the fish to battle the flow. In some tanks they will purposely battle the flow almost like a game. If you feel like it's too much flow you can direct the output of the MJ1200 towards a rock or glass panel to help "diffuse" the flow some. It's more of a trial and error than an exact science.

Re: Power Heads????

My clowns do this also. I think its kinda like washing themselves off then play. But who knows whats going through there little brains? I have much more flow then that and my clowns are healthy and happy from what i can tell. So i wouldn't worry about it.
The feather duster i would move. It's not going to tolerate direct flow for very long.
