RO/DI Troubles

I just hooked up my brandy new RO/DI unit and I can't get but a trickle of water out of it.

Got a supply line hooked up under the sink. It has a shut-off valve. Then it runs into the RO unit. Got the drain line plumbed.

The only thing I can think of that I did was I put a 25' piece of tubing on the discharge side. I did that so I could run the thumb valve over to the tank and top off every morning.

I can't see that making a difference though.

Do these things need to break in? Will it loosen up and flow better after a put 10 or 20g through it?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Oh, duuh! Might help if ya knew what unit I was dealing with:

Re: RO/DI Troubles

I didn't get that brand, but mine seemed to go through a break in period. Same exact thing. After a couple buckets it picked the pace.

Re: RO/DI Troubles

check to ensure you have water from every point of the system after the 3 intial cansters, the membrane, the di's more than likely it is the check valve on the membrane I had a customer that had abad valve I removed it & it wok great after that

Re: RO/DI Troubles

I have no idea what my water pressure is.

I changed out the 25' line for the factory tubing. It's 4' long. No change in flow.

There is a valve after the RC unit. It is in between the RC unit and the DI canisters.

There is also a "filter" on the drain line.

I'm getting a lot of bubbles in the system. Bubbles squirting out the drain line. Bubbles in the outlet tube. Bubbles in the DI canisters.

Good idea!! I'll start cracking fittings and see if I'm getting flow at all points in the system.

Thanks

Re: RO/DI Troubles

The restriction in in the RO unit.

I have awesome flow through the 3 filters on the bottom. Good filter through the valve and into the RO unit. But coming out the downstream side of the RO unit--it's nothing but a trickel.

Looks like I'm going to have to figure out a way to boost my water pressure. Not gonna be easy, considering I live in an apartment.

Any ideas?

Re: RO/DI Troubles

I have a pressure tank on my RO/DI side, so I have 4g on hand at any given time. But when the pressure tank is empty, all I get is a trickle.. But surprisingly, that trickle will make around 100g a day. Sounds normal to me compared to mine. Mine is an Aquasafe Systems 6 stage w/pressure tank and faucet. My city water runs 75psi.

Re: RO/DI Troubles

The output after the membrane will be slow unless you have a booster pump and/or dual membranes. The ratio for clean/rejected water is 4-1 so for every 1 gallon of 'good water' you have 4 gallons of 'waste water'. Colder water will slow down production also but be careful because warm water can damage the membrane! It takes my unit 8-9 hours to make a trash can full of clean water

As always, check out our sponsors for needed corals or drygoods. They help keep our site going

I am considering dual membranes to help conserve water. Here are some test results from thefilterguys.biz that show how using dual membranes with a booster pump help to reduce wasted water: Water Saver Test Results

Re: RO/DI Troubles

My new system was shockingly slow for a few gallons and then it just got faster on it's on. With that said, it still "looks" slow if I am watching it. I have a 100gpd system and I can see where it really WOULD take all 24 hours to make that much. It's just a FAST trickle at it's best but once you start filling jugs up it's faster than it appears (hence the wet floor last night when I left it filling a 5g pail and forgot).

Re: RO/DI Troubles

Mine is just a wimpy Culligan system. It's rated at 25 gal/day, so when my pressure tank is empty it will only gives me a few drops/second.

Re: RO/DI Troubles

We just got a monstrous unit from AquaFx as a raffle prize at MACNA. We needed a new unit but this thing is huge so we are going to have to figure out a new way of operating. Should be a lot easier in the long run though.
I never thought about a booster pump. I may have to get one now.
Thanks for the tip.
