Remora Pro Skimmer - Good or Bad

Why isn't this thing working?

I'm running a Remora Pro Skimmer on a 50 gallon tank. It came with a Mag 3 pump that I used until it stopped working, along with the skimming basket. Since then, I have been using a MJ1200 without the basket. I've gotten more stuff with the MJ1200, but the entire 2 months I ran it with the MJ1200 I got less than 1/2 inch of stuff in the cup with it set at the wettest setting. I now have it hooked up to a Mag 5 pump and was expecting different results, but I can't get anything high enough to even go into the cup.

Could the skimmer itself be defective? If not, then I would rate this as a really sucky skimmer! Based on other people's recommendations, I would say that is not the case.

My Remora works great with the MJ1200 but it is not a PRO just the regular Remora. Sorry I don't have any ideas for you. Try sending Woodstock a PM. She had one for years on her 90g and loved it.

That's what I do when my skimate production drops and it comes right back to normal. I tned to have the oposite problem. Mine skims VERY wet. Not uncommon to get 3-4 gallons, yes gallons, of skimate in a week. I have to supplement my makeup water with salt water to keep salinity up.

The injector is the area that you get to by removing the little white screw, right? If so, yes I have. Just cleaned it again last night.

Re: Remora Pro Skimmer - Good or Bad

Personally, I'm not surprised that the Remora Pro didn't perform well with a Maxi-Jet for a feed pump, but I AM surprised that it doesn't perform well with a Mag 5.
I ran Remora Pros for a couple of years and was quite pleased with the amount of nasty crap they took out of my tank water. I do know from personal experience that they work better with the pre-filter box, as it also works as a surface skimmer, but it's built for use with a Mag 3, (size is the same, but less gph) I don't know how it would work with a Mag 5. I suspect the slots wouldn't let in water fast enough to feed the larger pump.
As with any skimmer, it's sort of a balancing act...you have to adjust the collection cup up/down until you get the kind of foam you want.

How often do you clean the riser, when it gets coated the bubbles break before reaching the cup, this gives you chunks and light colored fluids, the mag 5 might be causing a little to much turbulence try valving it back a bit

Maybe you don't have a lot of nutrients to remove.

Re: Remora Pro Skimmer - Good or Bad

I've cleaned the little plug thingy about once a month. I've never notice any coated the bubbles breaking before reaching the cup, or chunks of stuff. Right now I do have light colored fluid in the cup that has accumulated during the day, but it ain't very much at all.

I had the Mag 3 with the skimmer basket hooked up until the pump went out, which is what it came with. I do think it worked better than the Mag 5 or MJ1200, but it didn't do that much.

The MJ1200 was a temporary thing, but it was quieter and had smaller bubbles so if I could get the same in a larger pump I'd do it!

I also got the extended cup thinking that would let me sink it down more to raise the bubbles, but it doesn't! It has to raise the bubbles even more!

I'm going to go back to the Mag 3 pump for now.

Re: Remora Pro Skimmer - Good or Bad

I have the pro with a mag 3 and it works great. No complaints, no issues. I do clean it out just about every Saturday though and the cup needs emptied about every three days. I have it on my 120 reef tank.

Re: Remora Pro Skimmer - Good or Bad

If it is skimming well for your 120 then my 50 should be a piece of cake! It's rated for over 75 gallon tanks after all!

Anyone see any way that the skimmer itself is defective?
