T5 ho lighting

Is there a rule of thumb for T5ho lighting as in wpg, t5's are unfamiliar to me and Ive heard the par is much greater than vho's?

Re: T5 ho lighting

Rule of thumb is crank it. Buy the best ballasts, reflectors and bulbs you can. Don't get less than 4 for any tank and 5 or six is probably better. If you have an extra deep tank like a 110 gallon, get 8. They commonly come in 2', 3', 4' and 5' lengths. You can get lots of par with the right set-up. You loose the shimmer and the heat of MH.

Re: T5 ho lighting

I would go with higher T% if you can. I think mine are 54w and I wouldn't want less particularly on the 90g. Maybe I am being dyslexic again and they are 24. I'll look for the box but Frank probably threw it away.

Re: T5 ho lighting

My those lights are bright.
Ok I have 2 54w on the 90g and 2 24w on the 20g. Both are Nova Extreme lights. They are doing great jobs where they are. If the 90 was not going to be a pony tank I would look for a lot more.
Anyway. That's what's running here.

Problem is the watts only go up with increased length, I could pack it full of 24's but dont really want to get another ballast

Re: T5 ho lighting

Guess that explains why mine are different. I a motoriously bad at this stuff. Still with the MH you can put the big light stuff in the middle.

Re: T5 ho lighting

one thing you might want to think about is the bulbs. 54watters have alot more punch than 39watters. i have 80watters that burn up any LPS even on the sand. too much for most sps too if run all bulbs. but i am running 600watts of T5's for 72x18x20 tank.

Re: T5 ho lighting

it just opens up so many options for placement now, a 16'' wide tank is really hard to work with
