Re: UV Sterilizers ??

I was running a UV sterilizer on my 100 gallon sps tank. I found no huge benefits from running the sterilzer. I have since removed the unit from my tank, I have lower water temperatures, and I have not noticed any difference. Many people run these units, but I have no use for one in my tank.
I have never had any ICK or any other disease. I would save my money and use Garlic and selcon to treat any health issues. This is what I do in all my tanks. The best way to keep away disease is to prevent it.
I believe preventative measures are the key to success.

Re: UV Sterilizers ??

There are other ways of killing Ick, none of them are fun. Yes a UV sterilizer will help but be aware it kills indiscrimately and takes out the good with the bad bacterias. That's usually not a problem since the good are reproduced again quickly by the inhabitants of the tank. Be aware also that UV sterilizers cannot be relied upon to keep the tank free of disease, but IMO a sterilizer is a good thing to have. As far as quality of sterilizers I'm not as qualified to answer that and someone like Icstorc who has one will be along.

Re: UV Sterilizers ??

UV sterilizers is a very debated subject. Some believe in it and some dont. I have always used one and I have seen ich in my tank , but it doesnt last very long. Right now I use the Current USA Gamma brand and It seems to be working very well. I have also used the hang on tank brand called turbo twist.

The cause of ich is water parameters may be off . The problem in the tank needs to be fixed or ich may keep returning. I really think the UV sterilizer will help minimize ich . Also soaking the food in garlic and the fish still may need to be treated in a quarantine tank.

Re: UV Sterilizers ??

A UV sterilizer can be a valuable tool for a reef tank, but won't cure your ich problem. They only kill the parasites that pass through the filter, and that's only a small percentage of what's "bugging" your fish. Adding a bit of garlic to the food source MAY help the fish fight off the infection, but to truely end the problem in your tank, you'll have to remove all fish to a quarantine tank (or tanks) for 4 to 6 weeks, treat that QT with either hyposalinity (reducing the salinity to 1.009) or treat with a theraputic dose of copper for that time to kill off all the life-stages of the parasite. Your display tank will have to remain totally fishless for that time to allow all the various life-stages of the parasite to die off. (they need a fishy host to live )
There's no easy way to eliminate ich in a reef tank. IMO, the medications that are "reef-safe" either don't do anything, or aren't all that "reef-safe," and the ones that really do work, aren't "reef-safe" in the slightest...

There are several different garlic coumpounds on the market for aquarium use, and many people make their own from fresh garlic...Myself, I used Garlic Guard with good results.

Re: UV Sterilizers ??

I use a KENT product called garlic extreme. I just ad a few drops to the tanks food, along with a few drops of selcom. My fish are super healthy, and as I said previously I have NEVER had any VISIBLE ick on any of my fish.
I like trying to used natuaral mean of prevention, If I can.

Re: UV Sterilizers ??

The Garlic only boosts the immune system of your fish, it does not get rid of the ick. Healthy fish can fight off parasites and disease better than sick fish.
