Post PURA PhosLock media

I bought Pura PhosLock (made by Magnavore) yesterday at my LFS. It seems to be the same stuff as phosban (ferric hydroxide) but it is packaged WET.

At a glance it looks to be MUCH cheaper than phosban but since the media is WET (unlike phosban's 150grams that is DRY) you are getting much less product. It also took a bit more rinsing than the phosban did. I did like the large media bag w/velcro closure that came with it.

Other than the small amount and extra rinsing it seems to be working fine with no adverse affects on my livestock.

Re: PURA PhosLock media

Never heard of it. Why does it come wet? what is it thats making it wet, water? Did you check to see if all the bags at the lfs were wet? Sorry for all the questions, it's just strange that it came wet and that makes me nervous.

Re: PURA PhosLock media

RowaPhos is also packaged wet (damp). The instructions say to keep it moist. Don't know why? Possibly an exothermic reaction when it gets wet?

I'm not totally sure either however dry it's prone to powdering. I would think that wet it might not be as vulnerable. Just a guess. The stuff seems to be basically high grade rust flakes or chips.

Re: PURA PhosLock media

Woodstock,

I just got some of this from my LFS, because they do not carry Phosban or Rowaphos. Any more word on the quality? Any problems? Does it do the job?

Re: PURA PhosLock media

It worked fine for me (no rise of po4 when in use) and I would use it if there was no phosban available....but the quantity of it seems to be about 1/2 of what phosban has. So at a glance it looks less expensive but it really isn't.
