90/110 Upgrade plan

Well, I am planning my upgrade for when I get back to the States. I'm planning on either a 110 or 90, drilled for overflow in the back (I prefer the idea to a siphon) with a 38 gallon tank as a sump. 2x250 MH and 2x55 HO t5s.

Questions. ASM G3? or is a G2 enough? I want to have all the equipment in place when I arrive. I'll use the topoff and aquacontroller from my 50. I also intend to plumb a phosban reactor into the setup. Return flow will be split to either two sea swirls or a manifold, I'm not sure which way I want to go there. What kind of bulbs have people had good luck with? My intention is to be able to keep any kind of photosynthetic organism.

Re: 90/110 Upgrade plan

I would get the ASM G3.

Good lighting choice!

I have my two phosban reactors (1 carbon/1 phosban) mounted inside my sump (hanging on the side). They are powered by one mini-jet 404 power head. They don't take up too much room.

One each, two total. THey are daisy-chained together with one pump (404 mini-jet). It works out really well.

I have mine set up the same way. Technically you can daisy-chain together as many as you like, they are simple devices. You could run, Phosban, carbon and Purigen if you wanted. You say up grade. What are you upgrading from?

I personally like the sea swirls having used them myself. However they are bulky, take a lot of room above the tank and it is recommended to do periodic maintenance on them. Which can be a pita when removing them from the tank (make sure to use a union fitting somewhere near the top of the tank to make removing them easy).
Another option to the sea swirl and the manifold would be an Oceans Motion unit which is basically a manifold that changes the outputs the water goes to, works like a less expensive motorized ball valve unit.
AF as bulbs, you are wide open on options. Do you prefer a whiter tank or more on the blue side? If you are using single ended halides this is a great site to compare 250 watt bulbs:

I like the colors on the Ushio 10ks, thanks for the link! The colors really seem to come out with those and actinics.

Re: 90/110 Upgrade plan

You'll be happy. I personally found the AB's more to my liking but I didn't run actinics. But the Ushio's never made me unhappy
