Talking LIght idea ? ? ?

Ok here is the thing... I have a 10g tank that's 20" long. I want to add some higher quality lights than my Coralife 28W 60/60 is giving off. I have been seriously looking at getting this..

Orbit | Current What's Next 1020 which is 20" and produces a total of 80W of light.

Then I got to looking and realized the next size up 1021which is considerably brighter at 130W but only 4" (2" on each side) wider. Looking at the diagram it's similar in design to my Coralife unit in that the bulbs don't extend to the end of the unit so if I got the 24" unit it would be slightly wider than the tank but the bulbs would fill the tank with light and give me substantial more wattage. Yes I realize there would be some "modification" involved as to not have a HUGE amount of light "Spillage" off the sides but I am capable of that. Any reason other than what I just mentioned to NOT go with a 24" light????

Re: LIght idea ? ? ?

Good thinking. Keep in mind heat transfer. It might be an issue with the 130 watt fixture.

Yeah that was my only real "hurdle" that I Can think of. Ideally I would LOVE to hear from someone else who has DONE this and can give input so that I'm not potentially throwing good $$ out the window. With the included legs there is a good amount of distance between tank and light so that would help and they are fan cooled (built into the system).

thanks for your thoughts and ALL of your generosity!!

Thread HIJACK in progess BTW is it normal to not be able to find any of my tiny starfish after the first couple of hours? I have searched hour after hour both lights on and off... mid-day, mid-night, early morning and have YET to be able to spot one. I mean it's ONLY a 10g tank but they could be hiding inside the LR about anywhere because it's all VERY porous and holy!!!

Re: LIght idea ? ? ?

Well, you might want to take the time to figure out just how much light you could possibly lose by having too large of a fixture. It may be smarter to purchase the proper size fixture for the aquarium with slightly less juice as far as watts go. saves on electricity bill as well as heat.

As far as the star fish, and other small critters... that's normal as far as i've noticed. In my setup i'll notice a real cool lookin little critter, and then never see him again for 3-4 weeks, so that's absolutely normal

Re: LIght idea ? ? ?

Not seeing the tiny star fish is very normal. They are alive and multiplying as I type so don't worry. You'll see many soon

What about THIS option...

20" Coralife Aqualight 96w Single Linear Quad Tube Strip Light

gives me 96w total and it's made for my tank and it's a reputable brand....

thoughts?

suggestions?

Donations?

I'll just keep my eyes peeled for those lil starfish... I'm sure they're just "shy" and stuff

Re: LIght idea ? ? ?

Any heat issues with it NOT being fan cooled?

Do you have it sitting on the rim of the tank or elevated with the legs?

Thanks for your input!!

Allen

I've got mine elevated on the legs. The unit does get warm, nothing out of the ordinary though. Mine has a single pc style cooling fan. I have my heater set to about 76-77 and my temp is usually around 81 degrees. but that's with the lights, two powerheads, an aqua c remora skimmer, and a whisper 30-60 carbon floss filter. so the extra heat from the lights is minimal, but you will get a lot of evap if you don't have a hood, but that's alright, keeps the water fresh
