| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed Thanks. Looks like they have one similar to the Iwaki, and also the T2 that I have.

| Totally stoked dude ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed They are very similar to the Iwaki, but supposedly better. I don't know the reasons why they are beeter. But the ones I've sold in the past have received very great feedback. I used a Velocity pump like yours in the past. I definately had heat issues. I would say they Panworld and iwaki's are a better choice. But as you have found the larger Iwaki's do get a LOT of complaints about noise.

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed My saga continues. Today, after I went on a tour of pet stores throughout the Salt Lake Valley, I purchased the 30RLT (American Motor) from a wholesaler in Centerville. I installed it ~ it was very loud and still a bit too powerful. I could probably have tweaked flows and forced it to work, but my gosh, the noise was horrible. I have now installed a Mag 5 I borrowed from a friend. It is currently just hooked up to a single line into the tank. Perhaps if I get my own pump I will reattach it to the SWCD. Anyhow, this seems to be the correct amount of flow. Someone needs to explain again the Mag would be yuck? This seems to be working fine. I already have two internal pumps running the skimmer and UV. The sound of this one isn't as noisy as the skimmer, and much quieter than the darn Iwaki. I don't think the tank will handle the Mag 7 based on what I am seeing with the Mag 5. I know the one place will let me return the 55 pump, not sure about the other place.

| Reef Shark ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed Mag Drive pumps aren't "yuck", but tend to be a bit noisier than other submersibles, and depending on the model, may add more heat to your tank.

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed Ok. I may end up going this way. It is much quieter than the Iwaki and has the correct flow. I have plenty of room in the sump for it, and I am used to some heat from the Titanium pump I had previously. I could see this pump getting clogged easier, and will need more cleaning so I will have to think through that a bit.

| Neon dottyback | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed When you are dealing with external pumps, and noise, mounting is everything. Often a soft mousepad under a pump will go a long way to keeping it quiet. The worst way to mount an external pump is to screw it to the base inside the stand. The stand acts like a sound board and makes the pump seem a lot louder. It's also possible to get noise down by shock mounting the pump. In this case you mount the pump on a piece of plywood, and suspend the plywood using nylon string and/or springs that get attached to the stand. This is a lot more work though, and a mouse pad often works almost as well. |

| Totally stoked dude ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed The reason I said yuck on the mags is from my experience using them externally. The samller ones aren't so bad, but once you start getting into the 7's, 9s and 12s they get loud, and I think every single one I have used (only 6) has developed a leak of some sort. Not bad leaks, but enough to see the salt creep build up around the pump. Although I did have a 12 I hooked up once that had a slowly steady leak from the second I hooked it up. That one ended up getting plumped internally. I should have worded it: If you are using it internally they work much better. ![]()

I'll second the bolded part...I've used 2 as external pumps, and both dribbled just enough to make a salt-creep mess...

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed I'm going to use this internally for this reason. I think I am going to go ahead with getting one of these. If I change my mind later I can use it for a spare pump. Thanks for all your help on this! It is greatly appreciated!

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed Ok, the 55 has been returned, but when I went to return the 30, they talked me into trying again. I am going to have them do it! I am beat! By the time I am done, the only other pump I will have in the sump will be for the skimmer. Everything else will run on the 30 (UV sterilizer, refugium, return flow, phosphate reactor, and carbon). In the process the SCWD will be removed, which is what we think is the primary cause of me not getting this to work so far (as well as some of the noise).

| Golden Moray | Re: Urgent Pump Help Needed If your going to do a submersible pump and want quiet my first suggestion (if they have one the right size) is an Oceanrunner. I've got a 2500 on my 65 gallon and you can't hear it at all. Next choice would probably be a Quiet One. If you plan to use a Mag, plan to put it on a mouse pad. |
