Unscheduled Water Change

Woke up and found a small problem on Monday. Just trying to organize under my tank when I notice this....

Only about 10 gal leaked out and most of it was contained by the stand. So much for my day off. Ran out to the LFS and picked up a 55 gal tank. I had a 40L underthere but figured I could squeeze the bigger tank in. Cut baffels and installed as so....

The fun part was sliding it in and out without the stand collapsing on the one side. I took 6 2x4 and wedged them in across the front, back, and sides to support the weight above.....

Everything went in ok with a few modifacations for the added height of the 55gal. Had to rearange the baffels a bit and tank is back up and running. Just thought I'd share and show the reason people use acrylic or rubbermaids for sumps.

Re: Unscheduled Water Change

I have to say that it took a lot of cajones to take out the side of the stand like that. I would have made a mess in my pants doing that.

That just "cracked" me up (pun intended of course)

Good save TNT_Tile! And very nice work on the WAY you went about it.. I would have to remodel the whole house instead of just attacking the problem at hand....

When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Unscheduled Water Change

Is your stand made out of steel tubing? I think I see that at the base.

Re: Unscheduled Water Change

Just a standerd wooden stand with the bottom piece of thin board cut out. I've had the sump under there for 5 yrs but added some baffels to stop microbubbles when I added an extra pump a few yrs ago. I think my one baffel was to tight and got pushed by pressure to crack the glass. As far as pulling the stand apart, I had my 6yr old girl under there holding things up. The two by fours were just for show.

Re: Unscheduled Water Change

Yikes! Good work on the fix TNT. Cracking tanks and sumps are still my biggest fear I can't immagine the damage if my 180 were to blow a pain of glass.

Re: Unscheduled Water Change

Luckily all the water was contained and I just soaked it up. Heard a pop the night before and didn't think anything of it. Caught it first thing the next day.
