lighting

what is a good all around general light that will help out live rock as well as some beginner corals. i would also like to get some sort of anemone in the near future. i have a 55 gallon FOWLR tank. i also have a ballast lighting system.( i think thats what its called, it was given to me by a friend, its the type of lighting that sits just aboove the tank and has no real "hood". any help will be greatly appreciated

this is kind of what i have JBJ Lighting Fixtures

Re: lighting

Those lights will work fine for live rock, soft corals and even some LPS corals. If it's been used for a while, ask your buddy if he has replaced the bulbs recently. They need to be replaced every once in a while as they lose intensity.

Most anenomes require metal halide lighting. You may be able to keep a condy anenome or some kind of tube anenome. I think think they require less light, and some actually need no light. Just be knowlegable about what you buy.

Re: lighting

Also be sure the tank is well established (a year old) and has very good water parameters. Anemones are one of the most delicate creatures we put in our tanks and they require almost perfect water conditions to thrive long term.
