Unhappy Sump Installation HELP!!!!

I recently bought a megaflow sump for my 55 gallon tank. my tank is not pre drilled therefore i have to get a siphon overflow prefilter. i was looking online for plumbing products and came across the Lifegard Customflow Water System. the description for the product was detailed toward canister filter intsatllation and said nothing about sump's. i was wondering if anyone know's if i can install the water system on my sump? and if so will using this system eliminate me having to use the siphon overflow prefilter. if someone knows please help me.

Re: Sump Installation HELP!!!!

First off I'm no expert so take this for what it's worth. I don't think that system will work with a sump because, when you shut off your return pump it'll siphon water from your display untill the level of the drops enough to break siphon. That alone will probably overflow the sump and cause a flood. Aside from that, once the siphon is broken it won't reestablish automatically so when you turn on the return pump it'll pump all of the water out of the sump to your display and with no return flow...another flood. This doesn't happen with a canister filter because it is a closed system.

Re: Sump Installation HELP!!!!

That Lifeguard set-up you're talking about is designed to use in something like a closed loop set-up. Actually made to use with their filter system, but that's basically a closed loop...
You want a good pre-filter/siphon type of overflow box. LifeReef makes the best in the biz...MANY of the cheapos on Scam-bay aren't well designed, and ya takes yer chances on a major flood with them. Buy a LifeReef...sure, they cost more, but how much would it cost to replace your flooring after a flood?

Re: Sump Installation HELP!!!!

i gotta say i bought one of the cheapos in ebay and it works perfectly. the only weird thing is that the overflow box didnt have teeth in it, and i had to dremel those in myself. otherwise, it was cheap, and has worked without fail.

i got this one eBay: Siphon Aquarium Overflow Box 600g w/ Lift Pump (item 160107040202 end time Apr-25-07 12:47:35 PDT)

Re: Sump Installation HELP!!!!

I first saw this one on ebay but ended up getting it a little cheaper directly from the manufacturers website. Been working great for me. Really like the cover for the HOB part.

Re: Sump Installation HELP!!!!

u can make them automatically start back up by attatching a powerhead to suck the air out, this will prevent a flood. I had mine hooked up to a maxi-jet 1200, alwys started right back up and also gave me good circulation as well

Re: Sump Installation HELP!!!!

the one i got from ebay comes with a free powerhead that sucks the air out in case of losing siphon. i use the powerhead to feed my skimmer instead, but it was a nice gift lol
