Re: Auto Top off Container???

if those are ur levels u are perfect.
as u add more and more, water changes will of course correct the levels, but then it can deplete a little faster than the next schedule water change. So to keep the levels constant, i add the calcium to the top off and it adds it back in slowly, similar to how its being used up, i like this better than one large dose mid-week

Re: Auto Top off Container???

i dose a 2 part seachem(dry) every week even my calcium and alk levels are to check. IMO you need to dose this on a regular basis to replenish any lost minerals from your tank due to your livestock. i think when they say "as needed" means to dose more than normal if your levesls are below normal.

Re: Auto Top off Container???

just thought i would throw my two cents in on the container issue since i went through this a bit. on the bottom there is a recycle sort of sign, and in the middle there is a rating 1-7 1 being the best. i have been told use nothing but 2 and above for something in a reef tank because the others can leach very nast chemicals into out systems.

Re: Auto Top off Container???

I'm on the same wave length, thinking of getting a 300 gallon and would need a custom sump built for it. Looks like yours turned out great!

Re: Auto Top off Container???

I found that my local hunting fishing hiking camping store has lots of water storage containers. I have a 5, 7, 17, and 33 gallon tainer from them and they are great and come in a really pretty blue color that blocks the light from getting into the tainer and greening up my water and the price is oh so nice....... if you have any questions just ask and i can help as best as i can....

WATER BARREL

that is a link to a company that sells water storage containers that do not leach anything into your water... the 15 gallon one is nice.

Snelly40,

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Auto Top off Container???

I saw a design while surfing for an auto top-off system without a pump...
Have to use a jug for the TO water that can be sealed really well (screw on lid)
has a fitting at the bottom side of the container that sits in the sump, and a tube coming from the top of the cap that is glued to the side of the sump, and the end of the tube is at the water fill level (Open end down)... when the water drops in the sump, it lets air into the cap so water runs into the sump from the bottom fitting... once the level comes back up to the fill line, the air is blocked and no more water can come in... The container has to be above the water level of the sump, but is pretty simple...

That would be a great tank for the auto top off without a pump...
They put the faucet in the bottom, and you put the vent in the 1 1/4 NPT plug on top...
Run a small hose from the vent to the sump and probably about a 3/8 or so from the faucet to the sump and you are in business...
close the faucet when you need to refill the barrel, seal it back up and turn it back on...
