Use of pumps inside tank?

I've noticed that some tanks have pumps inside of them. I have always used powerheads for water movement. Is is better to use, say a Rio 2100 pump and place near the bottom of the tank for increased flow? I always thought pumps were used to connect to skimmers or filters only and not to be used for water movement. I have some old pumps laying around and could use more water movement. Just want to make the most of my equipment...

you can use whatever you can for water movement, the price you will pay for pumps IN the tank will be increased heat transfer from the pumps to the water...if you want more movement, maybe you can add a closed loop or something like a new icecap vortech where the pumps are mounted outside the tank.

Have you thought about using one of the 'old pumps' to make a closed loop? Be warned though, this site generally isn't RIO friendly. Something about leaking voltage, and fires, and melted windings, and copper contamination... They convinced me to replace my RIO 1700 not too long ago.

What is so good about a closed loop? I've seen it, but dont know much aobut it.

It provides extra water movement in the tank. Just water out through the pump and back again.

also, since it is all enclosed, no chance of overflowing due to back siphoning if you have a power outage. With PVC being so easy to work with, it is adaptable to whatever flow requirements you have. Very inexpensive too. A rarity in this hobby.
