what is the difference between a hob filter and a canister filter? cant they both hold the same things?

Canister filters are quite a bit bigger and usually under the tank. They are mainly the same. The canister filters will hold more carbon/filters..

sorry. i know what they look like. is a hob kinda just like a smaller version of a canister?

Pretty much. Just a smaller less effecient version. In either case you need to be very sure to keep them clean or they become nitrate factories.

Another difference is that canister filters are pressurized. the water is forced through the media. a HOB will clog and bypass the media.

Also because of it being slightly "pressurized" the canister filter media can be much finer resulting of more filtration of finer particles that usually pass through HOB filters.
