Skimmer 101 Underway

May be getting a RR tank soon - 65g w/30g Oceanic Sump. I don't know much about skimmers so I'm hoping you guys/gals can point me in the right direction to begin my research.

- Are there different kinds of skimmers (f/sumps)?
- What are the most popular, rode hard, put up wet skimmers?

Thanks.

I love the ASM skimmers. Easy to maintain and work great.

Re: Skimmer 101 Underway

thanks, i'll check those out. i guess another prerequisite i will consider is getting a skimmer that is transferable to a 120g (my final destination).

does that pose a problem, having a skimmer that is 2x overrated for the tank you have?

Re: Skimmer 101 Underway

I hope not. Mine is. Actually a lot of people say that the manufacturers overrate their systems as well. I have a skimmer that is rated for more than double my water volume. Partially because of the overrating and partially because I want to add another tank hopefully soon.

Re: Skimmer 101 Underway

I had a Remora Pro on my 125. It worked great. Easy to use. Not terribly expensive.

Re: Skimmer 101 Underway

theres a great bit of info about skimmers at http://www.hawkfish.org/snailman/skimmer101.htm the same guys also has instructions on a DIY skimmer that Igerold made and that im currently working on.

If you wanna go the DIY route, itll be more fun and scary... but less expensive! about $30 - $50 for plumbing and another $50 for a good airpump. you can always make more than one, or make one oversized in order to facilitate future upgrades.

ok other than that, my only skimmer experience is with a cheap $30 skimmer that works just fine on my 30 gallon system.
