No Im not using a grounding probe but after this scare Im going to research them

and Im not on a GFI yet.... Im bad!!!

Hate it when that happens! and that smell, like spitting on a hotplate eeyuk! glad your ok Bro, I had 1 big jager leak, took it apart for fun and they are thick glass, ive got 2 more in a big tank that are great and 1 that stuck on so all in all not badSteve

I should install a GFI for my tank equipment. Multiple GFI's are best to keep one 'trip' from turning off all equipment.

Got it Woody....the differance lie's with the differance between a static charge and an open circuit....ground probes are best used with a GFI due to a stray current being grounded would shut your system down within 10ms. I know that it was worth the few bucks to go down to Home Depot and replace my current wall plugs with GFI plugs where my tanks are located, I have had over flows shut the tank down before the circuit breaker can pop and before water get all over the floor......GFI are a must for a reef tank

Brothawolf, I'm sure glad your tank is OK. I've been wanting to purchase a thermostat as a back up, just in case one of my heaters decides to stay on. As much as we all have invested in our tanks, a second thermostat is wies.

Using two smaller heaters instead of a large one is also good security in case one gets stuck on, the damage isn't as bad. Currently I don't have to run one and I am glad. But in the past, after several sticking heaters, I always used 2 smaller ones instead of 1 bigger.

I ordered jager heaters today. Went to a few LFS none had em and the ones they did have were about $40 each.... I ordered 2 jagers for less than that.... Also ordered the RK2!
