Diatom filters?

Does anyone here use diatom filters on their tanks? I borrowed one from a lfs close to me and it was amazing what it pulled out of the water. My water was clear in one day. Ive been doing some research on them and trying to decide if this would be beneficial to run periodically ( not all the time) for cleansing of the water..

I was amazed to read that is can even help pull ick from the water column. it doesnt bother the good bacteria.

Never tried one....if you used it every once in a while I guess it could be a good thing...it could help if your tank gets out of balance....Thier is such a thing a Over Filtering, corals such as Frog spawn thrive in less then perfect water conditions....plus I don't see how you can filter one particulate and not another??........I guess this filter would fall into the same catagory as UV Filters and adding Ozone to your skimmer.....

i had a Vortex for 20yrs, used it for polishing,,,when it finally died, i got a new one~ they are great

This is because the bacteria that you want in your tank colonizes on all the surfaces. The ammount of bacteria that is actually living in the wter coloumn is very minimal whereas the protozoa it boasts removing has to go through a free swimming phase where it is suseptable to being filtered outof the tank. I do serriously doubt their claim that it will remove 100% of the freeswimming protozoa simply because it doesn't completely remove all the water from the tank and put it into another tank. the water goes back into the same infested water that was in there before so it can become reinfested. I'll agree that it'll remove 100% of the protozoa and particulates from the water that PASSES THROUGH the FILTER but NOT 100% of the protozoa and particulates IN THE TANK. I know this difference seems subtle but it's important to realise the difference.
