Lime water Top off

Alright, for all you lime water\kalkwasser top off folks what are the cons of topping off with lime water?

From what I have read and experienced here are a few of the pros:
Increases Calcium
Increases Alkalinity
Aids in phosphate precipitation out of water

So what are the drawbacks? Are there any?

Re: Lime water Top off

Accidentally overdosing and inhalation of the dust are concerns, but are easily manageable.

Kalkwasser's benefits greatly outweigh the risks...

Exactly what I did (not the inhale) read about it, dripped it to fast, had 5 hippos on their sides, survived but I never tried it again. Steve

Re: Lime water Top off

boozeman, I have a calcium reactor to get away from dosing all the time, now I built my own limewater topoff (currently building a new one out of acrylic).... and I have to agree..

Kalkwasser Rocks

Re: Lime water Top off

I'm dripping limewater every night to replace evaporate. It helps maintain your PH at night. Like already stated, don't drip too fast... I think the ph of the limewater is about 12.9 or close to it... a fast drip could drastically effect your PH. I usually drip about 1 to 2 drops per second. Also if you use Mrs. Wage's Pickling Lime, you are getting the same thing without the high cost of Kalkwasser from your LSF.... I"m not sure JFK Jr. likes Kalkwasser though ... LOL

Some of the stuff to watch out for.. 2 tsps per gallon of RODI water is all that can be mixed. More Kalk won't dissolve.. Also once mixed, let sit until the suspended particles settle on the bottom.. I usually let mine sit for at least 5 hours. Make sure that it is covered during this time... Then I just syphon off the clear liquid into another container and use that to drip into my sump.

I've been using Mrs Wage's for quite awhile and usually you can find it at the grocery store in the canning section. Hope this helps.....

Re: Lime water Top off

Actually I bought a case of Mrs. Wages Pickling lime. I also am now auto topoff with limewater rather than straight RO/DI, works like a champ.

Re: Lime water Top off

good question!

no drawbacks that i know of i always mix my kalk lean, 1tsp to a gal. so i dont have to worry about accidental overdose, i only let it sit for a couple of min. to settle and drip it in faster than most. But on my glass covered 120 i only drip in 3/4 gallon of this lean mix twice a day. Prior to adding the glass canopy it it was 3-4 gallons a day of topoff daily, and wet windows around the whole house.

the lean kalk is the way to go for me, it works great in my 10g nano and does not stress anything.

Re: Lime water Top off

I still use the kalkwasser from my LFS. I mix it every morning and drip it in at night, after Letterman and beddie time. I mix mine also at 1tsp/g. I keeps my calcium and alk right where I want them after I got them where I wanted them. I kinda like the stuff too.

I've heard of it but haven't seen this yet....

That's my question. Is there a difference? I gotta pay enough for salt I wouln'dt mind pinching a penny if it has the same effect!!??

Re: Lime water Top off

Well I did a little calculation. Randy's two part costs ya about 80 cents a gallon. Mr Wages Pickling lime runs about 7 cents a gallon.... beats dosing two part....

Re: Lime water Top off

I topoff daily with kalk but don't have it hooked up to a large reservoir which is trouble waiting to happen IMHO, so besides dumping a large amount of kalk saturated water and causing ph shock I don't see any other cons. This is my prehistoric method of dosing with pickling lime
