If you plan on useing macro algae id say 24/7. Thats what i do. The point is to keep them growing all the time so they pull nutrients out.

Re: How long do light your refuigium??

Many people also run the fuge lighting opposite the tank lighting. It helps to minimize the day/nigh ph swing. I hear either that or 24/7 the most. Mine is 24/7 right now since I just set it up. I will go to opposite the tank lights after it has some time to really kick in. Maybe a couple of months.

Re: How long do light your refuigium??

Mine used to be 24/7 but recently I changed the photoperiod to run opposite of my display lighting to allow the algae to respire.

Re: How long do light your refuigium??

LOL. you all are funny. I think most people do the reverse thing for PH reasons also. I still do mine 24/7. My PH drops down to 7.99 at night and i dont worry so much. It go's back to 8.5 by morning.

Re: How long do light your refuigium??

I've been running mine 24/7 for 2 months but am thinking of switching over to opposite of main for respiration reasons. Wonder what the long term side effects of 24/7 is on the macro! Maybe early retirement?

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: How long do light your refuigium??

Well when you use a refugium with say cheatomophia, Your saposed to export the growth out on a regular schedule. This exporting helps to remove nutrients and cause new growth on the macro. By running the lighting 24/7 you keep it growing new growth and cut out the old.
