am i cynical about ebay? heck yes. i've had so many people try to rip me off on there. it's not uncommon for people to set up multiple accounts and "buy" things from themselves, and leave themselves feedback on crap to give a false sense of security to potential customers.
I know too well of what you are referring to, but the ebay seller has a legitimate electrical supply store in Chicago since 1912. It's not some guy selling bulbs on ebay out of his basement.

You can bypass ebay all together and buy directly from them.... even in person.

Also... they sell a multitude of lightbulbs... from movie projector bulbs to aircraft bulbs. The aquarium metal halides are a tiny part of what they sell. When I emailed the company asking about their metal halides, they had to ask me for what application I was interested in... they sell metal halides for all kinds of uses.

Now as far as the bulbs go... I can't say... I haven't tried them yet. I'm still waiting for pics from the guy who bought them. I'll post them if he sends them.

Re: 250W 10K bulb $23.99 WHAT!!!!

Hey guys,

I've been out of this for a while and am setting up a 37 gal cube. I ran across a guy selling halide retros using these bulbs. I'm no expert on halides but it came with a 175W 10K Plus Rite bulb. I did a little research on these bulbs and they are from China. Here's a little info on the company...

http://www.made-in-china.com/import-...g-Co-Ltd-.html

Anyhow, mine is up and running (havent tried the 14k, 20k) and looks very much ice-white like what I've seen in the local reef stores. I am supplementing with pc actinics and it gives a nice effect.

I'll keep you updated if I have any problems!!

Cheers-
Eric

What brand are they? Are you talking about the Plus Rite bulbs we're talking about?

Re: 250W 10K bulb $23.99 WHAT!!!!

I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow when they come on. Here is another website that sells them.

http://www.insidesun.com/

I think their target audience may be growing something other than coral , but they do carry bulbs in the 10k-20k range for reef tanks. I bought one of the retro halide kits from them... seems like a really good deal but time will tell.

Here ya go. This is with 72w PC actinics on. No corals to show the color but it does an ok job of bringing out the coraline color. No complaints so far. Plus Rite 175W 10K bulb.

Looks good...

Keep us posted if you run into any issues. I've heard good things about the Plus Rite bulbs... can't say the same for other brands being sold on ebay and other sites.

I'm definitely looking to try the Plus Rite 250W 14,000k... I'll post a review when I get them.

It's funny... here in South Florida, plenty of people's homes have been raided by police and have been found to be running hydroponic marijuana setups. The police get tipped off by Florida Power and Light due to the high electric bills from their use of Metal Halides.

Since setting up my tank, I have always wondered in the back of my mind If I would be getting a visit from the PD one day.

Re: 250W 10K bulb $23.99 WHAT!!!!

when i lived in trenton nj, i was breeding Madagascar Day geckos, and vieled and jacksons chemeleons. also a pr of rock dragons, a 125 reef, a 70g amazon basin tank, and a 26g terrarium tree frog tank. one night i got a visit from the PD. it was a very civil knock, they asked what i was growing. i said coral and lizards~ well 45 minutes later and 2 pots of coffee the tour and Q&A was over and we all had a good time. even got the PD as a customer for my store. the K9 units bought all their stuff from me from then on~
