55 gallon drum

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, but figured I would try. Does anyone out there know a good place to get a plastic 55 gallon drum? I am looking at setting up a RO/DI system and would like to use a 55 gallon drum to use as my storage for the water. I looked at some home improvement shops in the area (Walnut Creek, CA) but they didn't have any. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a cleaning supply store here in Vegas that is always throwing those things away. It would need to be washed out very throughly, because they have a windex type of cleaner in them. You can try one of those shops in your area too see.

What i use is a tank off of a mobile detailing trailer.

Troy, excellent link! Thanks.
Skeletor, there's a place in Turlock that is a barrel recycler. I got 2 barrels from him last year for $15.00 each. Have to be careful & specify what you want though. He gets some that had shampoo in them, and others that had wine. I got 2 of the shampoo barrels by accident, and never could the soapy bubbles or smell to go away. Scrubbed them with hot water, cold water, bleach, muratic acid, sand & rock salt. Still had a smell & bubbles. Went back, talked to the manager, they took them back & gave me wine barrels. The open head barrels,(most desireable for us) are the ones with shampoo. The wine barrels are closed top, but I just cut the top off & place it back on for storage. It's not a tight fit, but since the barrels just sit in my garage...

If all you want it for is to make/store water in, what about one of the grey 42 gallon Rubbermaid garbage cans from home depot or lowes? I got one last week at Lowes for $29.00. Completely food safe.

Water is the "universal solvent". Merely filling a container up with PURE water enough times will eventually strip the nasties out of any container. Obviously, in the case of a shampoo container (as it is a surfectant), it's gonna take a little longer. In this case, I'm considering RO/DI water to be PURE water but it really isn't.

A surfectant "makes water wetter" by reducing surface tension. That's the best description I can provide. Obviously this complicates things a bit but you would be able to eventually use the shampoo filled barrels. Would it be reasonable in terms of time or quantity of water consumed? Probably not.

I'm just postin' so I can put up a link that I think is good and it comes from Iowa (where Troy lives).

i agree with boomer i just use a rubbermaid trash can from lowes just wash it out good before using and you dont have to worry about what was in it before leaching into your water.just one more thing you dont have to worry about.we've got enough of that already.lol.

I think I heard somewhere that you had to be careful of the rubbermaid barrells leaching out undesirables into your water but I'm not sure if it was those or another manufacturer. I would recommend juice barrels they are food quality barrells, for that matter any food quality container would do.
