Turbo Flotor Carbon Trap

I made a carbon trap to put on top of my Turbo Flotor Multi 1000 today.

It took me all of 30 minutes. I got tired of the skimmate smell so I made this trap to fit on top of the collection cup cap.

I went to Lowes and picked up three items:

3 X 4" PVC Reducer.........$2.18
4" Drop in Grate..............$1.28
3" Drop in Grate..............$1.28

TOTAL..............................$4.74

Reduced odor coming from the sump.........PRICELESS!

Here are the pictures. This shot shows the reducer, the two grates and the cap from the collection cup.

In this shot I have placed the 4" grate inside the reducer. This is the side that will be epoxied to the skimmer collection cup cap for a permanent fit.....

Here I have filled a mesh bag with some carbon. I ended up taking some out but you get the idea...

Here is the carbon bag being fitted in to the top grate which will remain removable to change out the carbon as needed....

Just a follow up note on this. I have noticed (errrr....not noticed???) a significantly lower level of odor from my sump after installing this carbon stack.

Will be a must as I have the same thing. Not enough room under my tank so will have the skimmer exposed out of the side of the stand. Will build a cover, but the carbon trap will cover the smell!
