I'm going to add a closed loop to my new 75. Where is the best place for the intake? I'm planning on a center built in overflow, with submerged intakes inside the overflow. Dorso standpipe to the sump. The return pump will be in the 500 - 700 gph range with spray bars along the top and bottom of the tank, to the left and right of the overflow. The closed loop pump will have a 700 - 1200 gph pump.

Or am I way off here?

Your pictures and specs would be really great.

first off i am definately not as knowledgeable as alot of people here but heres my thoughts pista01.i would put the intake as far away fro the overflow as possible because your overflow is there to collect all the waste products from the tank.so the returns shoul be posisioned to create not only more water flow in the tank but to also direct the flow to the overflow so m ost of the waste is going to the overflow and into the sump to be purified.at least thats my line of thinking.as far as the return pump being in the 500 to 700gph range/with spray bars,i think i would up that because i think you should have at least a 10x turn over rate on your gph.also with the closed loop i would stay in the 700gph range on a 75gal tank,i think 1200 would be over kill.dont take this as the gospel though.lets see what else is recomended.hth.

Sounds reasonable. I thought putting the intake inside the overflow would keep the critters out of it. I also thought the higher flow closed loop would make up for the lower flow return from the sump. maybe it should be the other way around.

I plan on mostly LPS and softies, so I won't need a lot of overall flow.

Not sure I can really get a picture of it, but I have a GenX/Mak4 under the tank that is hard plumbed out of the stand into 3/4" flexible hose that goes into a SCWD. The SCWD outputs are 3/4" PVC and are placed on the end of the tank opposite the overflow. The intake into the pump is 3/4" PVC with numerous holes drilled in it. I put a removable cap at the top so that I could fill the line to prime the pump. I put unions on both sides of the pump so that I could easily remove it and a ball valve on the output side.

Hope this is useful

TDevil posted this link of a closed loop system on a similar thread I started a couple weeks ago....

I have 2 closed loops on this tank. Each is run by an Aqua Sea 5000. Water is drawn in by 2 x 1 1/2 bulkheads into the pump then up to a 1 1/2 Motorized ball valve. Each valve has 2 banks of inputs into the tank (5-6) On the tank side of the inputs are 3/4 locline so I can dial in the flow. Approximately 6 inputs from the closed loops are 3/4" mixing eductors, multipling the out put by 5. Each Motorized bal valve is on a random repeat timer that switches them back and forth every 7 minutes. What this creates is areas of wild flow (waves crashing in) and then mild flow (ebbing of the wave) when it switches over. I am really happy with the flow in this tank and all in all it runs about 35000gph
This pic shows the inuts back to the tank a little better.

What exactly is a closed loop. Is it when the water goes from the tank, and then back in, without going through any filters/sumps???
