I don't think Mike counts for having a closed loop.... his is more like a "closed tidal pool" or perhaps "closed ocean loop"

Cheers,
Keith.

Well here is my design as of today. It's been through a little rework recently after seeing some posts so it's a work in progress until my fish room is completed. This is for a 180 6' long all glass. I have one of the pumps a Via Aqua rated at 1160 gph, which I think will be on the closed loop because it does not have enough head pressure for the sump.

Looks good John. That setup is a lot like what I did. Except I ran my SWCD on the return. Not sure that I won't shange that to what you are showing here. I just want to figure out what size pump I want to use on the CLS system. Only want to buy one once.

Great ideas, ? I have two SQWDs for my 180. I was planning on running a little giant on the one overflow that is built into the tank- to the sump etc. I also have a Sedra 1200 (1200 gph) that I was going to set up as a closed loop with one of the SQWDS. Cant decide if I want to direct the flow out of the SQWD opposing each other or direct the flows from the back of the tank to the front at the bottom of the rockwork. What do you think?

I think from the back to the front, that would give you some great movement keeping anything from setting before its picked up by filtration.

Now I just wish I had a shelf behind my tank for the pump .... as all these wisely have one that works just ideal.

Then again, I left 8" of space ... but GREAT info and ideas guys. Been thinking about this a while ... and this is now making me start to scheme.

john
have you tried this setup, i had one like it, but didnt like having the "TEE" so closed to the pump, with 1 short line and one long line into the tank , Instead i moved my mag 12 to the back center of the tank, and had "even length" lines going back into the tank.

Welcome Jer-z-reefer!

This is interesting. I'm in the planning stages of a new tank. I don't have alot of room so I was thinking a 30 or 40breeder. A closed loop is how I want to go. So far this has given me alot of ideas.

Is the 10x flow guidline still what I'm shooting for? how would I calculate head pressure?

Thanks

Do you have any links for the Motorized ball valves?
HERE'S one I came across! Seems a little pricey to me?

Also anyone know of any saltwater two speed pumps? Or a pump that can wired to a variable speed control? I’m trying to come up with a closed loop system that can be slowed down at night!

Here's some Plumbing Tips that will help you calculate your head pressure! As for the flow rate I’ve heard that 5~7 x the tank size is all that’s needed for the filtration! Most good closed loops that I’ve seen are running over 10 x the tanks volume by them self. So the combined flow would be like 25 x or more.
