stand question

I have 37 galon tank I am currently working on to turn it into a reef. The question I have is what kind of lumber should I use 2by4 to me seem alittle too large.

Re: stand question

Consider taking looking at comparable size stands at the store. It will give You a good idea on how to build your own.

Re: stand question

i would not use anything smaller than 2x4s. you dont want to make the stand just strung enough, you want to know without a doubt that the stand will hold its own. i know 37g doesnt seem like alot of water but i'd rather be safe than sorry

Re: stand question

JoJo makes a good point . However room underneath the stand is critical. the footprint of a 37 leaves precious little space. 2x4's will use up a lot room & is overkill for a tank that size. Keep this in mind when designing your stand.

Re: stand question

if not 2x4s than what? 3/4" plywood with 90* iron angles for support?

Re: stand question

I made mine mission style out of 3/4 oak, not one 2x4, glued and screwed, for my 120gal, 225LR. Copied the style from AGA.

Re: stand question

Take a look at a factory stand designed for a tank this size. You won't see 2X4's in it. They appear flimsy but designed to carry the weight with the least amount of material necessary. 2x2's with plywood walls properly braced maybe? Just a couple of inches of extra space underneath can make a big difference. A wrought iron stand with a shell of veneer or paneling might allow for the most room & be cost effective.

Re: stand question

If everything is square and verticle, a cardboard could hold it, you could use 4x4's and not square and verticle it would just colapes. Many an engineering sudent has done simular projects for a class project.

Re: stand question

I used 1x4 for a stand (29g). A 20g could fit below if I built the stand around it (my design flaw ) but as it is, I can squeeze a 10g in.

here is a construction pic:

SIDING.jpg

its very strong and stable and can hold several times the weight of a 29g
