| Midas Blenny | Re: DIY skimmer box That is correct. I see the link in "working with acrylics" but Ca seems a long way to get material. Yes, I just want two small boxes one for a skimmer inside the tank and one for a hang on the back outside the tank. I plan to link them with bulk heads. 3/8" mat'l for the outside one and 1/4" for the inside one. I would like to find a business that will make to my specs, there are no suppliers close to me and if I have to order all the mat'l I'd rather get them assembled. |

| Midas Blenny | Re: DIY skimmer box I may just use glass and silcone it. The plastic just seems to have a much nicer appearance. But may be too much trouble to get what I want. Do you guys know any custom shops that don't mind small jobs? Glasscages turned it down saying they only build larger tanks. |

| Golden Moray | Re: DIY skimmer box You might wind up breaking the glass. I'd do acrylic foe multiple reasons.

| Manta Ray | Re: DIY skimmer box Everything I have built may fall apart tomorrow but I have used plexiglass from the hardware store for a long time with no ill effects. I don't know the brand. For small things like overflow boxes I use 1/8 acrylic from my frameshop. Maybe a frameshop in your area would sell you some non-UV acrylic. The UV stuff has a quartz coating and I don't know if you should use it.

| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | Re: DIY skimmer box The problem with non cell cast acrylics is the absorption of water. Stuff like plexiglass will absorb water. It can also release toxins into the water like phosphates. Cast acrylic is more dense. harder. You guys should read up on it more. I was looking for a cheaper way out of building my skimmer and found a ton of reasons in Google why i should only use cell cast.
