refugium lighting?

Is there some guidelines for lighting the fuge?

I used to grow hydroponically and i know what happens with improper lighting...

I'll be using compact floros, 26 watters, is there a lumins per gallon per foot or something like that?

Peace....

Micro algae don't care too much about lighting.
my 40gallon fuge is doing great under 2x23w 5600k from hardware store.

Daylight is one name. I believe it is a GE? It's a Chroma-Lux 50 anyway. Walmart or big box hardware. Red paper sleeve last I saw them. Less than $10. CRI of 91. 6500K?

Now what are you using to hold the light and make it work. I bought a strip light and stuff but hate the way it works, so I am going to take it back and get a flood light set up, and am not sure what to get.

Re: refugium lighting?

I have 2 of them in an outdoor security light fixture just like whats on your garage. Instead of hard wiring them i riganeered a cord with a plug and plugged it in. it works very well. it was less than 30$ for everything.

Re: refugium lighting?

It also depends on "what" you are growing as each organism thrives under different lighting. Cheato doesn't need a great deal, but a seagrass refugium would. A pod farm refugium wouldn't need much but a Xenia nitrate reducing refugium would need more. Research what you intend to keep and light it accordingly.

Re: refugium lighting?

I'm not really sure of what I'll be growing there. I will have a bit of a pod farm but the primary purpose will be filtration. I'm open to any suggestions at this time. I have a 3d rendering of what my plan should look like if that would be of any help.

As far as fish go, I'd like to have a small school of chromis, probably either black and white (iomelis) or blue green ( viridis) The research I've done makes me believe that these would work. as well I'd like to put in a Gobi, probably brown barred if I can find one. Trying to get a balance in the water column right down to the sand. With the gobi, I may have a hard time keeping shrimp in the tank but if I have enough other food or it, I may keep the shrimp for a while.

I understand the upper limit for stocking a 75g would be roughly 15 inches of adult fish, correct? I assume that the extra water in the fuge and fractionator isn't in the calculation. If it is then i'll have closer to 100 g. Also, Would that include the critters running around on the sand as well or is that a separate thing? I hope I can get away with a bunch of bottom dwellers, I love watching them do their thing. Another reason is that want a cleaner shrimp or two to help take care of the fish for me.

Thanks...

Peace...

Re: refugium lighting?

Ell cheapo Coralife T5's over mine. I went this way because the price was right, little heat and there made to withstand the saltwater.

i would think that the cheap cost and ease of these bulbs would make LEDs less than cost effective after your time assembling,buying,etc... yeah you would have the definite "cool factor" but i'll save my pennies for the display.
