Re: Looking for DIY skimmer

I was looking at the DIY instruction on this...

Wondered if anyone had any success with this??

Looks interesting!

But the pump will cost around $150+
So I kind of figured I was better off buying one from a good vendor...

Re: Looking for DIY skimmer

Seems to me that skimmers are pretty simple. Here's a design made out of pvc. everything is proportionate, scale as needed.

Re: Looking for DIY skimmer

We have a club member with a HUGE SPS tank, and he runs an Aquatic Systems Design skimmer... He loves it.

skimmers look very simple, but I have made several, and design and dimensions play a HUGE part in functionality. I have had ones in the past that I built that "worked", but you had to play with them all the time. Now I run a DIY skimmer with a sedra 9000 needle wheel pump, and it works very well.. but design has a lot to do with it. Heres a pic of mine..

And here are some pics of one I am working on for my clownfish breeding system.. (It was for my 125g system, but I used the one above instead):

And here is one I built for my old 55g system.. This one was built out of a spaghetti canister, and a CD rom spindle for a collection cup. It also worked well.. It was powered by a powerhead 802:
Argh! Cant find a full pic of it..Here is the cup:
