DIY Stand & LFS

I was at a LFS yesterday, getting pricing for a 50g tank. The owner gave me the price of the tank, then started to give me the price of the stand. I told him I was going to build my own stand. His response was, "hold it right there. Don't build your own stand. The tank manufacturer won't gaurentee the tank against stress cracks if it's not on one of their stands.".

I this just I line he's giving me, trying to sell me a stand? I thought about all the people on this forum who have built their own stand. Is this something I should worry about? If the stand is level and stable, it should be fine right?

There is usaully a garantee for 1 year on the tank if it is on a DIY stand, but there garantee is usually longer if it is on one of there stands. Oceanic, for example, 1 year on your stand, 5 years if on there stand.
I have never used on of the manufactures stands because I know that mine will be built better and last longer than thiers. Plus I can make it to the spec's that I want it to be.

If you look in the warranty section on the tank, you will see this info abou teh warranty.
