Just wondering how It cracked?
It was an "act of the reef gods" that will never be fully explained. It was a used tank that may have had some abuse in the past and I put some extra stress on it when I added the dividers or the 700 plus gallons of water flowing through it per hour and the skimmer pump turning 1200gph over in the tank. Maybe the heater clanked against the side once too often. The list could go on and on and on.

Just one of the hazards of having water on the living room floor and another reminder to make sure all of the electrical is up high and protected by GCI.

I am just happy I didn't ruin my floor or burn down the house and most importantly kill anything in my tank.

I would think the house is more important than the fish, JMO.

Reef Geek,

Excellent work on your DIY sump!!!

One question...when compared to my sump, the water level in your sump is almost to the top of your sump. The water level in my sump is much, much lower to accomodate the extra volume should a power outage or a main pump malfunction was to occur.

How does your system prevent from an overflow should a power outage or main pump malfunction occur.

Thanks for you time!!!

Good Luck;

I will take a pic later, but the level only goes up maybe 3 inches or so when I pull the plug. Most of that has to do that I drilled a 3/16 anti-siphon hole in my return just below the water line in the main tank. And speaking of the main tank, it is only a 29 so if my calculations were correct I am dealing with less than a gallon of water in a power out situation. The sump is 10 inches tall and to give you a sense of scale the baffles are 8" tall. When I pull the plug to feed it does fill to above the baffles but it doesnt overflow the sump. Like I said I will take a pic later. Right now I gotta jet to Home Depot for 3/4" self-tapping machine screws. I love DIY!!!

Nice design! Is that a pump in the overflow section? What is it used for?

Thats right naru, its a Rio 600 with the venturi option. Its used to start & maintain the siphon on the CPR overflow.
